Sadly, given the time period...I was actually expecting even worse.

You just know this guy lurks Twitter these days waiting to pounce when a female opens up about assault.

Imagine feeling so strongly about sharing this thought with others that you sit down at the table and write it by hand (or type it), put it in an envelope, put a stamp on it and go out and mail it. Do wrestling magazines have a history of fudging letters? Now imagine THAT ... that the staff came up with it. I always wondered that. Everything else in those magazines was a work, were the fan letters fake too?

Everything else in those magazines was a work, were the fan letters fake too? I mean, some probably were, whereas other ones would be real. It makes sense to print at least some fan ones since that's extra encouragement to keep buying the magazine if you want to have yours answered and printed.

Everything else in those magazines was a work, were the fan letters fake too? Not many were fake, no. They didn't have to fake them. I'm sure they added a few here and there over the years, but being a national magazine publisher, they received more than enough real ones to use. Same for the results section. And for decades before they phased it out in the early 80s, they had pages devoted to a pen pals section, with tons of fans headshot pics...and their full addresses. Mostly young teens (many of them young girls) and creepy mid-30something men. Couple of friends I know had theirs printed when they were kids. Another one of the magazines I was going through the night I found this had a full page devoted to the pen pals - there were 3 of the 30somethings, 12 kids - and six of the kids were girls under 15. Again, with headshot pic and full addresses provided.

Still though...*nervously tugs collar*

Not my scan, but: Considerably less of the creepy 30somethings in this example, but basic idea of what these pages were like.

I was still buying those mags at the time strictly for the related section where bands (or "bands" with a heavy emphasis on quotes as some of them were) were offering to send you their cassette free (or a dollar or two for the CD version).
