or Queen*
I love a tournament and I think it can seriously give 1-2 wrestlers a lot of momentum, but why did Vince make so many people take a king gimmick when it really only worked once? And it only worked once because Booker didn't take it seriously
Personally, I thought it was pretty cool to see Billy Gunn and Owen Hart just add King of The Ring symbols to their gear. Owen's "King of Hearts" nickname was also great
*It kinda worked twice, Regal as the mad king was an awesome storyline that got cut short

I mean the majority of hte time it is...
save for like maybe having "king" added as a title... most of the time they don't get the full gimmick.

Have the winner get a title shot at Summerslam, so it’s the summer equivalent of the Royal Rumble. It makes it relevant without saddling someone with a played out gimmick.

If YOU won King of the Ring wouldn’t you want to be called King and have a crown?
I know I would.

The Macho King both agrees and disagrees with the OP.

Because Vince?

Because Vince wants to recreate that popularity with King Booker, but doesn't seem to understand how and why it worked for him and not them. Oddly enough, it kinda works for Corbin - he was already a bit of an arrogant douche who wanted people to do what he told them (see: Constable Corbin), and the crown just made it worse - but it's also Corbin, so...

Because Kevin Dunn has a fetish for the Burger King and it's a way for him to get his rocks off.
*god I hope I'm kidding*

Really, who did they saddle the King gimmick onto and it didn't work? Usually it's the douchebag heels that get it and they make it work, at least for a period of time. I guess you could say Barrett because it stripped away a gimmick that was actually working. Macho King, Mabel, Sheamus and Corbin have made it work though.

"By God, it's King Austin! It's King Austin!"
"HEAR YE, HEAR YE! By royal decree, I hereby declare that Austin 3:16 says I just whooped thy ass!"

I have to disagree that it's working for Corbin. I didn't hate them giving him the gimmick because he's good at playing a delusional idiot, but IMO he's even shittier now than he was as a TGI Friday's waiter (with a lot of it being on the booking, to be fair to him)

The Macho King both agrees and disagrees with the OP. To say what I said in another thread, it really depends on the person. The King Gimmick worked for Savage because he was nuts, Booker went all in, Kurt & Owen were egomaniacs with huge chips on their shoulders. Well they all were but it worked. Compare to Bret, Austin, Brock and Edge who had a certain swagger. The KOTR was a Title to reaffirm who they were. Bret was the master technician, Austin walked around like he owned the place like a King, Edge was rising up and Brock destroyed and conquered his opponents.

Even back in the 80s, Vince would fall back on the King gimmick. Harley Race, Haku, Hacksaw, Macho King, all wore the crown and called themselves King. Mabel did it, too and got pushed to the main event. But the first four were all branched off the same tournament, and Mabel was the only one to do it during the annual PPV era. But since they revived the tournament in 2006, every winner has been subjected to the gimmick with only one real success, but mostly failures, and one "what could have been". It's just another case of Vince losing touch with what gets over with today's fans.

I think there is a lot of potential with the King persona and that’s why they’ve kept trying, to little success. Most agree that Booker is the peak of the gimmick, and the key is they really committed to it. Booker is very talented and he really put his all into the role, but management went all in. He had a Queen, a court, plenty of TV time and a World Title reign. It was an absolute success. I don’t think they analysed why it worked, instead they just occasionally think “We want to push this guy a bit...hey, the King of the Ring worked for Booker that time, let’s give it to _____”.
Since 2010 we’ve had Sheamus, Barrett and Corbin win King of the Ring, and they all dressed the part but not much else.

I thought his push was universally seen as a failure. You forgot Harley Race. I saw it as a nod to his wrestling background without specifically mentioning any other promotions. He also had the swagger to pull it off.

He also had the swagger to pull it off. I feel like Mabel's push failed more because Mabel wasn't good. Even looking back on it now, the visual of seeing him carried to the ring is a cool one in my opinion. I also left off Harley Race mainly because I really don't know anything of his run. Happened when I was a baby and never went back to look at it.

I have to disagree that it's working for Corbin. I didn't hate them giving him the gimmick because he's good at playing a delusional idiot, but IMO he's even shittier now than he was as a TGI Friday's waiter (with a lot of it being on the booking, to be fair to him) I always thought he was a bit lazy as a heel, his drawing heat mostly seems to involve tired and overused heel tropes like bellowing at referees for counting wrong, smirking, talking about how brilliant he is, and apparently baiting "smarks" who comprise a pretty small amount of the audience. Now he continues to do all that but wears an elaborate hat while he does it.
It's not good.
