198. Survive the Night (1993 TV movie) - Watched it on DVD. Okay, first and foremost, I must note that I am going into obscure territory here. This was a TV movie that aired on the USA Network back in 1993 and I recall hearing of this when looking at the old IMDB message board for Judgment Night (a movie that I must revisit soon, because I remember enjoying that one a lot). I had heard that this was like a female version of Judgment Night, but what's crazy about this was that this premiered on USA in January of 1993, whereas Judgment Night was released in theaters in October of that same year, but I had read a blog post that Judgment Night was filmed sometime in 1991 or 1992, and had been delayed a number of times (first September 1992, then April and May of 1993, and finally October), but that's what that article said and I can't confirm it. So my guess was that someone wrote a similar script and decided to use that concept for Survive the Night. It's possible that this movie was shot after Judgment Night was done filming.
Also, I watched this on DVD, which I was lucky to buy off of Amazon back in 2011 (not long after buying Judgment Night on DVD, too) for dirt cheap, probably because the seller had this on clearance. This DVD is so rare that it's either impossible to find or when you would find it, it's mad expensive. I was lucky back then.
Now with all of that out of the way, here's my take. Given that this was a TV movie, the production levels are rather cheap and it shows. But that is not a bad thing at all, as there are some entertaining TV movies out there. The movie had a good suspense factor, as well as some character development that works, not to mention some moments where you would feel for the characters. However, the acting of the guy who played the villain was a little too hammy for my tastes. I saw that he was having fun in the role at first, but at after a while he got a bit annoying. Also, when talking about character, one thing that sort of worked was when one of the main characters decided to fight back, but it felt like it foreshadowed an event that would occur. I also felt that Stefanie Powers and Kathleen Robertson had a decent, if good dynamic as mother and daughter in it.
If you can find a way to watch it, do so. It's not a bad way to spend 90 minutes.

137. The Guest
A soldier goes to visit the family of a fallen comrade. Then people start getting injured….and dead. Dan Stevens is wonderfully creepy as the soldier. The whole thing builds solidly to a slightly goofy conclusion. Overall it was a fun movie.

199. First Daughter (1999 TV movie) - Watched this on DVD. I will always remember this being advertised while watching WCW programming back in 1999, especially with them hyping DDP in this movie, as if he had a huge role when he played a henchman with minimal dialogue. I didn't watch the movie at the time, though, as I watched it nearly two years ago when I ordered it online.
Because it's a TV movie, don't expect a high budget in a film like this. For what it is, it's a fun action-thriller with a TV-movie budget. Mariel Hemingway is convincing as a badass Secret Service Agent, and I felt the chemistry between her and Doug Savant, as it was clear that he was the love interest in this film. Also, the scenery was nice when talking about the filming locations.
On the other side, Monica Keena was a bit annoying at first as the bratty teenage daughter of the president, but she came around, as seen in many other films. Also, I found myself laughing at some of the effects that were used, whether I'm talking about the CGI for explosions or backdrops in some scenes.
I would say that this movie is a fun way to pass an hour and a half. I wouldn't call it great, but it's entertaining.

Feels like it's trying too hard to be A Christmas Story except it's not as good and I don't even think A Christmas Story is that good anyway. [**]

Loved this way more than I expected. It's kind of beautiful to see how so much of the film is about an outcast helping to make sure that these kids don't feel like outcasts. It's funny, heartwarming, and almost everything you could want in a film like this. [****½]

200. First Target (2000 TV movie) - Watched it on DVD. This was the sequel to First Daughter. However, Daryl Hannah took over the role of Alex McGregor, as Mariel Hemingway was unavailable to reprise her role (though she reprised the role in the third and final film of the trilogy, First Shot). It's a TV movie, so there really isn't a lot in terms of budget and the plot is rather basic with an assassination plot, along with some treachery here and there. I liked First Daughter more, but this was a solid film. There was some eye candy in the femme fatale, who also showed a bit of a badass side as well. Daryl Hannah wasn't bad in the lead role, although I feel like Mariel Hemingway was better in that role. Also, with Doug Savant returning, I could also say that I liked the chemistry between him and Hemingway better, but his chemistry with Hannah wasn't so bad, either.
I would say it was a solid action-thriller with a TV movie budget, but its predecessor was better.
201. First Shot (2002 TV movie) - Watched it on DVD. The thing about this film is that this felt like an actual sequel to First Daughter and made no mentions of the events of the second film. With Mariel Hemingway returning this time around, she played her part well, whether it's taking part in the action or the downtime scenes when it talks about her marriage. Every film has a subplot and the marriage thing happened to be one of them. Also, continuing with this feeling like a direct follow-up to the first film, the character of the president's daughter was brought back, but was played by Jenna Leigh Green as opposed to Monica Keena (I believe the primary reason was that she was busy with the TV show Undeclared, given the timeframe this film was shot and later released). In my opinion, at least one character from the second film should have been brought back. I guess that one female agent was supposed to be a replacement of some sort.
As for anything else, this film had some decent action sequences, especially for its cheap budget. Don't expect too much from a made-for-TV film. I would put it on the same level as the second film.

128. Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) 129. Jungle Cruise (2021) 130. Psych 3: This is Gus (2021)Took me a week but I finally finished this on Peacock. This was ok I guess. Like I said after watching the second movie, it just feels like this franchise that has long since passed its expiration date, so it's just hard to get into.

#361 - The Humans
*Showtime
The director does a masterful job of creating an eerie and tense atmosphere. It’s some of the best work I’ve seen at that in a long time. The dialogue is a huge part of this and at times it can be hit or miss but the performances are all pretty great, with Jenkins standing out. Might need to sit on this one for a bit longer though. 202. Sing (2016) - watched it on Universal on Demand. Because the sequel is coming out, I figured that I should revisit this film. I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out but hadn't watched it in full since that time. I remember thinking that it was a fun movie. Many of the characters were likable and the actors did a good job playing their roles. Some of the actors did a good job singing the songs, too. Aside from Tori Kelly, who is a professional singer, the rest impressed me a bit, like Taron Egerton and Reese Witherspoon. It also had some good animation.

#362 - The Amazing Spider-Man 2
*Blu-Ray
This falls into the same trap as the third Sam Raimi film. They tried to do too much and cram in too many villains. At least that one had Sandman, who was well done but neither Goblin nor Electro is any good here. What saves this from being a nightmare and makes it decent is the chemistry between Garfield and Stone, as well as the beautifully shot Gwen Stacy death scene. [**]
#363 - Encanto
*Theater
I loved almost everything about this. Getting to see a culture that I grew up with depicted in this kind of film is always a plus. The animation is, as always, exceptional, and the colors are as vibrant as ever. I think every song is genuinely borderline great, with a few standing out as being truly incredible. Lin-Manuel Miranda has done it again. Stephanie Beatriz and John Leguizamo do phenomenal voice work too. I believe this has taken over as my favorite animated movie of 2021. [****½]

138. Red Notice
It was a very fun movie that the stars obviously loved doing. I wish I could have enjoyed it more. There were a number of inconsistencies that bugged me when they happened that they “explained” late in the movie. And I hate when a movie ends with a blatant setup for a sequel. Watch it and enjoy it for what it is.

129. Jungle Cruise (2021) 130. Psych 3: This is Gus (2021) 131. Nash Bridges (2021)This is the revival TV movie that aired on USA Network over the weekend. I'm honestly still surprised they made this. I remember watching and enjoying the show back in the day, but never really considered it any kind of pop cultural phenomenon worthy of revival twenty years later. Even weirder is that a central conceit of the original show was that Nash and Joe were already both on the north side of middle age and were just kinda doing what they could before they rode off into the sunset. Add twenty years and they just look decrepit. This was exactly what you would expect. Nash with one foot in "ok boomer" territory, Joe having become a parody of Cheech Marin, the newbies all being presented as spoiled millennials who can't do any real police work without looking at their phone, and a plot that feels like it was taken straight from a 90's direct-to-video action movie. Mostly entertaining, but not something that should happen again.

203. Judgment Night - Watched it on DVD. It had been a long time since I had last watched this. I don't remember when the last time was, but that doesn't matter. I had an itch to watch this recently, especially watching Survive the Night. I have always liked this movie, and still do, even though I acknowledge a lot of the problems with the dialogue and some plot holes, as well as thought that the big climax dragged itself out a bit.
That isn't to say that this movie doesn't have its charm, however. The performances were fine, especially from Denis Leary, who was so damn entertaining as the villain. This film also did fine with its presentation on making the setting seem like a bad part of town. The orange lighting was distracting at times, but it worked, because I suppose that it was supposed to look like streetlights glaring on the characters and their surroundings. Also, I must add that this film's soundtrack is more famous than the film itself, as it sold a lot back in the day, whereas the movie bombed at the box office. That's a shame, although this film does have its fans (myself included) and it's talked about positively online. But regarding the soundtrack, it's definitely one of the better examples of rap mixed with rock/metal, unlike what came later in the 1990s.
Despite some issues with the writing, this film holds up.

There's some weird stuff in here but it all works to create a massive story on an epic scale. The film is visually stunning with some masterful cinematography and some gorgeous shots throughout. I'll most likely have to watch it again to fully appreciate it though. [****]

140. The VelociPastor
What a steaming pile of crap this was. The story was crap. The acting was crap. The directing was crap. The camera work was crap. The Priest, ninja and doctor outfits looked like they were bought at the Halloween store. The dinosaur was literally a guy in a rubber suit. It was awful from start to finish. I absolutely loved it.
