#366 - Anna and the Apocalypse
*Vudu
I can't express my love for this movie enough. Every time I watch it, I like it even more. Screw it, this is perfect and I don't care who disagrees. [*****]

204. The Belko Experiment - Watched it on Blu Ray. I decided to close out November with this. I recall seeing this in theaters back in the spring of 2017, and I recently went to a local video game store that happened to be doing a Black Friday sale. I saw this as part of their inventory and thought "why not?" Plus, it was cheap, can't go wrong with that.
Anyway, I remember enjoying this when I first saw it but watching it again, I started to appreciate this film more than before. This movie may be an all-out gore-fest, but there were some elements to it that stood out. For starters, Tony Goldwyn's performance as one of the villains, as he gave off an icy and sinister vibe throughout the film. There was also some good music, as the Spanish covers to "I Will Survive" (from Gloria Gaynor) and "California Dreamin'"(from The Mamas and the Papas) were well-done.
I would have to give James Gunn credit for writing this film. He definitely has quite a style that I later saw in The Suicide Squad (the 2021 version, I mean). This movie feels rather Troma-esque, at least as far as the gore is concerned.. I wonder if it would have been different if he had directed it. In either case, I would say that this film got better for me, and it had been nearly four and three-quarters years since I last watched it. My main gripe, however, was that after seeing the deleted scenes, I felt that some, if not all could have added to the film. This film was short, so it wouldn't have made too much of a difference in the duration. But overall, I enjoyed it.

130. Psych 3: This is Gus (2021) 131. Nash Bridges (2021) 132. Doctor Detroit (1983)Latest arrival from Netflix. Interesting note, this movie almost ended Dan Aykroyd's career. At this point in the 1980's, while he was still a respected comedic writer, he was largely seen in Hollywood as washed-up as a comedic actor with the passing of John Belushi. An Abbott without a Costello so to speak. The box office failure of this movie, the first movie Aykroyd ever headlined solo, only reinforced that opinion. Luckily Trading Places was only a few months away which would completely change everybody's mind on him (and several other actors as well, but that's a different story). For those that don't know this movie has Aykroyd playing a geeky college professor who gets tricked into becoming the flamboyant pimp for a group of prostitutes, one of whom was played by Fran Drescher. Like I said, it was considered a box office failure back in its day, but has since built up a cult following thanks to its large presence on late-night cable television in the 80's and 90's. I can see why, it seems like a movie that would work better if you're half asleep and maybe a little drunk. I know that sounds like a back-handed compliment, but I really don't mean it that way. Some movies just work better when you stumble across them on TBS at 1AM.

#367 - Zoey's Extraordinary Christmas
*Roku
This gave me everything I could've wanted. The show was canceled too soon and if we never get anything else, this was a fantastic send-off. It was highly emotional, true to the series, used the holiday theme well, and had the great musical numbers I expected. [****½]

#368 - The Matrix
*HBOMax
A lot of movies from this era that have heavy CGI don't stand the test of time. This isn't the case here. The Matrix is still a remarkable standalone film. It has interesting characters, a really cool premise, and some of the best action and special effects you'll ever see. [****½]
#369 - Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde
*Starz
Nowhere near as fun as the original, though Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Coolidge are still icons. [**]

Had the sudden urge to go and watch the Indiana Jones films again. Haven't seen them for several years.
Raiders remains tops with Crusade just a shade behind. They're such good films, Raiders is so bang-bang-bang and brimming with confidence while Crusade has such great gags and interplay.
The other two aren't as good. Main thing is, honestly, I think I prefer Crystal Skull to Temple. I liked Temple more when I was a kid, I reckon. And the last 30 minutes are better than anything Crystal has, going from temple fight to mine fight to cart chase to rope bridge showdown. Great prolonged finale.
But the hour and a half getting there was a bit of a chore with a lot of icky stuff. Not just the bugs and brains and so on but the dodgy depiction of Kali and Hinduism, the careless racist and imperialist echoes, the fractured tonal shifts and, by God, Willie screaming and screaming and screaming.
Crystal doesn't excel at anything but by this point I've accepted what it isn't and what it is. Due to the time skip both in and out of universe it's a different vibe to the trilogy and always will be, yet it was a more even ride. And I love that final scene.
Raiders - 5/5 Temple - 2/5 Crusade - 4.5/5 Skull - 3/5

#370 - The Power of the Dog
*Netflix
An absolutely gorgeous film that is just so pretty to look at. It's methodically paced as I found myself not totally hooked about a third of the way in but then it all came together well and grabbed me without letting go. Benedict Cumberbatch has possibly never been better and the film is equally brutal and heartbreaking. [****]

141. A Boy Called Christmas
The story of how Father Christmas came to be. Except for the first two thirds of it everybody is depressed and arguing and fighting with each other. And then suddenly everybody is happy again. It doesn’t make a ton of sense but at least it has a happy ending.

142. Mr. Right
Anna Kendrick is a girl who keeps choosing the wrong guy. Sam Rockwell is a hit man who doesn’t want to kill people any more. There are gun fights and knife fights and fistfights and some hoopy frood named Steve. It was a little bit goofy but definitely a lot of fun.

205. Gremlins - Saw it in theaters. Some theaters in my area were bringing back some movies for the holiday season. This happened to be one of them. I will note that until today, I had only seen parts of this movie, particularly its final act.
I can see why this film is regarded as a classic. Some people even considered this to be a Christmas classic, although it could be argued that it's among those movies that happen to take place around Christmas-time and not a Christmas movie per sé. This movie had great effects with the puppetry and also stop-motion in one scene. Unlike its over-the-top sequel, this movie played a lot of things straight with how creepy the titular gremlins. However, there were some funny scenes as well.
I had a lot of fun with this one, especially in theaters.

#371 - Before Sunrise
*Showtime
There's not much to this in the way of an interesting plot or anything like that, yet this works wonderfully. Hawke and Delpy have outstanding chemistry to the point where their conversations are incredibly engaging. I was hooked from start to finish and fell for these characters. [****½]

132. Doctor Detroit (1983) 133. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988)So I signed up for Hulu last month to watch the latest season of Animaniacs and now I'm ready to cancel, but I figured I'd see what else was on the service that might interest me before I do. Found this, which I haven't watched since I was a kid, and figured I'd give it a go. This has some funny moments, but for the most part it's mainly carried by Elvira's, umm, "charms". And while she's cool and all it's not really enough for a ninety minute movie.

143. A Castle For Christmas
A novelist goes to Scotland where her father came from and buys a castle. Will she end up falling in love with the Duke? Will they have a big Christmas party? It was on Netflix so they had enough budget to cast Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes. Other than that it was pretty much a Hallmark movie.

206. Gremlins 2: The New Batch - Watched it on HBO Max. After watching the first one yesterday, especially in theaters, I felt like watching this. It was the first thing I did in the morning, because I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep.
The main thing that is noticeable about this movie is the tonal shift compared to its predecessor. The first film may have had funny moments, but it was dark and creepy. This one, however, is more light-hearted, over-the-top, and felt more like a cartoon. Not a bad thing, by any means, though, because I found myself laughing hard at various moments. There were a lot of funny moments, such as Tony Randall's performance as the Brain Gremlin, that Hulk Hogan cameo, or all of the bits with the gremlins all over the building. Hell, it didn't hold back on breaking the fourth wall, either.
Would I say this is as good as its predecessor? No, but I wouldn't compare it either as it feels like a parody that somehow worked. I feel that some people were hard on this back in the day. For what it is, it's a fun film.

132. Doctor Detroit (1983) 133. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) 134. Knight Rider 2000 (1991)So I found this on Netflix streaming last week and honestly I was surprised to see it there. I know Knight Rider was popular in its day, but an early 90's TV movie seems kinda beneath Netflix. This seems like it would be more appropriate for a service like Tube or Crackle, where it could be interrupted every five minutes for three minute commercial breaks where they just play the same thirty second Trulicity ad over and over. Seriously, why does a prescription medication need commercials? This movie, set in the year 2000, sees Michael Knight pulled out of retirement to return to the Knight Foundation to re-unite with KITT and team with a former policewoman who was betrayed and shot by her former PD, and only survived after having one of KITT's old processing chips implanted in her brain. This was underwhelming. Despite being made in 1991, it feels more 80's then the original. It's actually surprising how much things changed aesthetically over the 90's and how little 1991 looks like 2000. The movie doesn't seem to have the rights to the original shows music either, even though it uses footage from it. The new music really does nothing to get you amped up. It also has some vague political commentary running through it that I could've done without. Besides, everybody knows the only real continuation of the original Knight Rider was Team Knight Rider. Everything else is just wannabe's.

#372 - Halsey: If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power
*HBO Max
10/10 visuals, 10/10 music, 10/10 boobs, confused but intrigued/10 on plot. [****]
#373 - Dinosaur
*Disney+
A pretty bland Disney adventure. The opening scene without any dialogue is very well done but as soon as these characters start talking, it feels generic. The animation also doesn't hold up though that's most likely due to the era. [**]

144. Identity
Ten strangers who are stuck in a desert motel during a huge rainstorm start to get killed one by one. Who is killing them and why? Just when you start thinking you get it, the entire story gets flipped omits head. It’s an all star cast (John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Amanda Pete, Alfred Molina, Jake Busey) and they all throw themselves into the story. Very enjoyable. Just don’t get too attached to the characters.

#374 - The Matrix Reloaded
*HBOMax
I remember thinking the Matrix sequels sucked when I first saw them but maybe I'm just thinking about the third one. I really enjoyed this sequel here. The plot is convoluted and kind of messy but there are some really great action sequences and cool moments that kept me engaged. [***½]
#375 - Holidate
*Netflix
Much better than I expected. I came in thinking this wouldn't be more than a Hallmark level holiday film but it's a lot of fun. Roberts and Bracey have great chemistry and it made for a really enjoyable little movie. [***½]
