207. Falling Down - Watched it on DVD. I can't believe that I have never watched this movie before, save for the fast food restaurant scene, because that is the one scene that I was mostly familiar with, at least until now. Michael Douglas nailed the role as a man on the edge (I also thought his hairstyle was cool in this film). I also found myself laughing during some scenes because I could tell that there were some moments of dark comedy. Also, Robert Duvall was good in his role as the detective who was on the verge of retiring. I was also at the edge of my seat during some scenes. I would classify this as a dark comedy/drama/thriller. There were some scenes that I found funny, like this one scene involving a rocket launcher, as well as the fast food restaurant scene. I also feel that Joel Schumacher (RIP) got too bad of a reputation at some point in his career (I think it was because of his Batman films, particularly Batman & Robin), but this was before that film and he did a good job directing this.

145. The Machinist
Christian Bale plays a man who hasn’t slept in a year and is falling apart both physically and mentally. The torment that he was going through was painful to watch, but it was it was totally riveting at the same time. And it had an ending that pretty much answered all the questions that it had raised. I really liked it.

*Netflix
This movie is dumb as hell and I love it. Lucy Liu, Bill Murray, Sam Rockwell, and that soundtrack tho. [***½]
#378 - Rachel Getting Married
*Starz
A sometimes crushing movie that is great because of how realistic and flawed all of these people feel. This takes you on a wild emotional journey and Anne Hathaway is phenomenal here. I do think the third act of the wedding is kind of weak though. [****]

A pretty big disappointment. It wasn't flat out bad but it was pretty bland and mostly a waste of Rosamund Pike and Anya Taylor-Joy's talents. [**]

146. Holidate
After disastrous Christmases, two people meet and decide to spend every holiday together as friends. It is one of those rare romantic comedies that manages to be goofy and fun without straying into sappy and stupid. The cast was likeable the leads had good chemistry. I guess it counts as a Christmas movie because it starts and ends at Christmas.

#380 - Dear Evan Hansen
*Vudu
I wanted to like this so much more than I did. There are good songs (though somewhat disappointing) and the supporting cast is spectacular. Seriously, I loved all of the work by Dever, Stenberg, Moore, Adams, and the rest. The issue is that the story kind of makes you feel gross and you can't really root for the protagonist. Also, Platt's facial prosthetics were off-putting and took me out of things often. [**½]

#381 - Before Sunset
*Showtime
These movies are literally just two people having long conversations and that shouldn't work but it's actually so masterfully done here. Hawke and Delpy again have outstanding chemistry and I could literally watch them talk all day long.
That final "I know" is almost Luke/Leia levels of legendary. [****½]
#382 - Ghostbusters: Afterlife
*Theater
20 or so minutes into this, I was concerned that this was gonna suck. It turned around quickly and once the ghosts start getting busted, this was a ton of fun. McKenna Grace is phenomenal in the lead role and the callbacks to the original movie were really well done even for someone like me who isn't way into this franchise. [****]
#383 - A Quiet Place II
*4K Blu-Ray
I still prefer this to the first film and the same trend holds up on multiple views. Every aspect of this is spectacularly done except for the fact that the main characters are relatively unlikable. [****]

147. Going In Style
Three senior citizens with money problems decide to rob a bank. It is the 2017 update to the 1979 original. A fun time with a group of classic actors. And a super cute puppy as a bonus.

Probably the most underrated animated Disney movie ever. It's just about perfect, is less than 90 minutes, has fantastic characters, and is legitimately hilarious. I love this movie. [****½]

148. Father Christmas Is Back
Uptight and annoying sisters stress out when their estranged father shows up for Christmas. The first half was oddly paced and just seemed to establish the unlikeability of most of the characters. The second half is much better and actually manages to resolve pretty much all of the subplots.

I just really couldn't get into this one. It featured a story that didn't quite click with me and the action scenes didn't even live up to the previous two films. [**]

Watched this on my quest to see everything with Hailee Steinfeld in it. I thought the action bits and plot were both wildly generic. However, the scenes where Kevin Costner bonds with his daughter and the squatters in his apartment were enough to make this work a bit. [**½]

208. A Joyous Christmas - Watched a DVR recording. This is a Hallmark Christmas movie, and while I am aware that a lot of these made-for-TV Christmas movies have similar formulas, I tend to have a soft spot for them as they draw me in for some reason. With that being said, I knew what to expect going in. Main character has little-to-no Christmas spirit. Something happens along the way and throughout the film, the main character regains Christmas spirit, as well as meets someone. We know where that goes.
To call this great would be wrong, but I didn't mind it. Hell, I kind of enjoyed it, but there are plenty of other movies of this style that I have enjoyed better than this one. Natalie Knepp was likable as the lead, as was Michael Rady as the male lead. It was clear where things would go between the two, but what I was intrigued by was Bonnie Bedelia's role in this movie. Yes, the same Bonnie Bedelia who played Holly in the first two Die Hard movies was in this and she did fine with what she had to work with. I will note that a certain plot point made things obvious if you paid close attention and it was rather contrived, but for a movie like this, I guess I'll let it slide.
I would call this movie okay. Maybe a decent way to pass an hour and a half, but there are other TV Christmas movies that I liked better.

209. The Transporter - Watched this on DVD. I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep, so I put this on. I had told myself to binge on this movies lately and I had seen this movie a few times before. I enjoy this movie, but it's interesting to see how of its time this movie is (the early-2000s), with its soundtrack. I don't just mean because of songs that came out during that time, but also how a lot of movies (especially from that era) often had licensed music playing in scenes (and I don't mean in scenes in bars and stuff). Also, there were some action tropes that were common from that era, such camera-panning on a gun that is falling before being caught and of course, quick-edits in fight scenes. While the latter is commonly used to this day, aside from straight-to-video movies, how often do you see martial arts scenes with all of these quick edits and different camera angles?
With all of this being said, it's still a fun action film. I believe that this film was what cemented Jason Statham as an action star. Yes, he was in other films before this, but not as a lead. It's also short and sweet, and this isn't a bad way to kill 90 minutes.
210. Transporter 2 - Watched it on DVD. I will go on record and say that I enjoyed this a little more than its predecessor. Both films are over-the-top, but I find this one to have the first one beat. Being that there was a different director this time around, it was a little more lighter in tone and also in the visuals. The first film wasn't really dark, but there were slightly darker elements.
I didn't mind some of the absurdity, however. Yes, some parts had me laughing a bit like Statham managing to jump high enough to avoid being hit by two cars crashing into each other, or the hot femme fatale who only had one scene where she was fully clothed (not like I complained, though), or that jetski chase sequence. There was a little room for levity with the French inspector bonding with local cops and stuff.
It's a short film, but it's fun. Yes, there was some ridiculousness, but I think that's part of its charm. Plus, Jason Statham often has fun fight scenes. What's not to like?
EDITED TO ADD*
211. Transporter 3 - Watched it on Blu Ray. I remember when I first watched this, which was a long time ago (I think it was early-2010s), I didn't like it as much as the first two films. Fast forward to a few years ago, I watched it a second time and I enjoyed it a little more than before. Now that I watched it again, I would say that my opinion is the same as it was the previous time, although I think back and see what there was that I didn't like about it. That doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it, but I remembered thinking that the main female character was annoying in some scenes, as well as some of the editing in the fight sequences. I am aware that this was one by a different director as well, who would go on to direct one of the Taken sequels, as well as Colombiana. I know I've seen Colombiana, but I haven't watched the Taken sequels. Maybe I should revisit the former and finally check out the Taken sequels. Also, the gray color temperature was a bit distracting, even though the second one had that yellow color temperature.
The action scenes are still solid, though. The villain was fine, too, with the actor's hammy performance, although I thought the villain from the second film was the most hammy of them all. The fight scenes and chase scenes were fun. While this was my least favorite of the series, at least referring to the Statham films, I would say this film is fine.

212. The Transporter Refueled - Watched it on DVD. The first thing that I want to say about this is that this movie exceeded my expectations. It turned out to be better than I initially thought. I had read some reviews saying that with a new actor in the lead that it wouldn't live up to the other films with Jason Statham, but one should take into account that this isn't the first time that another actor had played the role of Frank Martin as there was that Transporter TV show from 2012-2014, which I must check out soon.
I have to say that Ed Skrein didn't do a bad job as it didn't feel like he tried to replicate Jason Statham in the role. Yes, there were some bits that the delivery reminded me of some scenes from the previous films. With this being a sequel/soft reboot of the Transporter series, I could see where they were going with this. It had been seven years since the third film and because I had watched the other three prior to this one, I noticed some minor callbacks to the other films but also put in a different spin on things. I also noticed that this movie amped up the violence a tad more compared to the other three. The first two were rather tame, as was the third to a point, but I noticed that sometime in either the late-2000s or early-2010s that violence in PG-13 films started to get a little heavier (I don't know about the ratings in other regions).
As for other things, I had already noted that Ed Skrein did fine as Frank Martin, and he showed that he could do fight scenes as well. A lot of the chase scenes were fun, but one stood out compared to the rest. Really, I thought that the movie was enjoyable and better than expected. I wouldn't call it the best of the entire Transporter series, but it was fine.

213. Don't Look Up - Saw this in theaters. Another Netflix original that I decided to watch in theaters and I have to say that it was worth checking out before it came to Netflix. This movie was not being subtle in its satirical nature and it was clear to see the things that it tackled. I'm not going to discuss anything political here, but the only thing that I will say is that when watching it, because of its lack of subtlety, the clarity of its satire worked because that was what made it funny, especially when talking about how some people downplay real world events and such.
I also have to say that many of the characters were entertaining to watch, especially Meryl Streep as the president, as well as seeing Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence play astronomers. I found this to be a good satire. Yes, it may have been rather on the nose, but it worked.
