Bumblebee is one I haven't seen. I think, before this one, I'd seen three Transformers movies and thought they were all pretty shit. Only saw this one because the gf wanted to see it, and was surprised that I found it enjoyable. The little kid was an obnoxious twerp, but he wasn't in it for long. Mirage was great--I enjoyed him a lot. For a robot voiced by Mr. YMMV himself, Pete Davidson, Mirage was very likable. I didn't know he was voicing it. Usuaully, Pete Davidson annoys me in everything he appears in. But he was very good voicing Mirage.

I grew up watching reruns of the original show and was the perfect age for when Beast Wars hit. The first Transformers movie was a great experience for my buddy and I in the cinema despite it's flaws. By the fourth movie though it had gotten dire. That one was so long and meandering that by the time the dinobots showed up, I'd forgotten they were supposed to be in the movie and was so bored that I just wanted it to be over. Never bothered watching the fifth one. Bumblebee was good and Bay wasn't directing this one so I was cautiously optimistic.
Overall it was alright, didn't blow me away. There are some characters I would have liked to see more of. Rhinox was basically mute and I felt like that was a loss. I think him and Alayna could have had some great interactions if it was classic Rhinox. Hell classic Cheetor and Mirage probably would have been best friends. I do feel like it took a bit too long to bring the maximals into it and I wish they'd gotten a bit more characterisation. Hell, I was starting to wonder if they would even maximize at one point and when they did we only got a few glimpses and that was it.
Scourge's two helpers were pretty much non descript, I don't even remember their names. There were some fun moments in the movie but yeah, it feels like it could have been more. Really, they could probably have had fewer autobots and given the Maximals more screen time.
All in all though, it was enjoyable and nice to see the Maximals get their screentime. That said, some of the battle despite having tons of disposable enemies was just kinda bland. It didn't help that all the nameless enemies were the same colour.
I'd be down for another maximal outing if they found a way to bring some more in. Hell, I'd be down for a G.I. Joe movie because why the hell not. I was born in the 80s after all : )

If the animated movie with Chris Hemsworth performs as poorly, I would expect Transformers to remain a TV property for the immediate future.

Fair enough, best to let it sit long enough to start completely fresh.

I'm that one weirdo who's confused when so many people enjoyed the Maximals screentime in this. I loved the Beast Wars characters for their writing, wit and often relatable personalities.
Here, Rhinox had zero lines, Cheetor had one and Airazor doesn't even get to transform, but is at least cruicial to the plot. She and Primal are the only ones who get to be actual "characters" in the movie, but to me at least, neither had standout personalities.

Including marketing it's probably the first of the live-action movies to have made a loss at the box office.

That's a shame as it was better than probably half of the Bay movies. Honestly, the only Bay movie I would put ahead of it would be the first one, and even that is pushing it. Personally, I think Bumblebee is the only one of the lot that I would say is a straight up good movie. This one was just a perfectly fine, middle-of-the-road movie.

They teased people with a proper Transformers movie in Bumblebee's opening, then decided nah, stick to the formula, here's some irritating kids and a rambling half arsed story. But look, big booms!

But look, big booms! And the Maximals, who nobody outside of the fandom has ever given a shit about and were only relevant back when the franchise was dying on its arse. Still, Transformers One sounds promising. Given Orion Pax, Elita-One, Alpha Trion and "Gladiator" Megatron are the leads it's almost certainly going to be an exclusively Cybertronian movie.

There's definitely an era of people for whom Beast Wars was their Transformers, even more for whom it reignited their love of Transformers. Yes they may not be as well known as the G1, but they did help revitalize the franchise when it was dying.

Yes they may not be as well known as the G1, but they did help revitalize the franchise when it was dying. Sure, it kept the franchise from dying, but has had relatively little traction since and doesn't really resonate with casual audiences, and with every subsequent iteration of the franchise largely ignoring it save for a few characters... rather like this movie. Most of the BW fans I know were disappointed at how little shine the few characters that appeared got. I mean, half of them barely have a line of dialogue between them, and some of them don't even transform.

Apparently the new Beast toys they'd released in the War for Cybertron: Kingdom line sold really well, so there seems to be some kind of internal push to use those characters.
But speaking as somebody who loved (the last two seasons of) Beast Wars, this movie and the War for Cybertron Netflix show seemed written and directed by people who absolutely did not care about Beast Wars.
