I thought about this after seeing Booker T being described as just that. It sounded ludicrous to me at first but then when I started thinking about it, I'm not sure he had an actual ****+ level match. The matches usually mentioned as his best are the best of 7 matches with Benoit but realistically, I think those might just be very good, above average TV matches. I'm not sure they were "great" necessarily. Benoit had matches like that on TV all the time. I think it's the best of 7 gimmick that is remembered rather than the matches actually being amazing.
How about Lance Storm? Very good wrestler but did he ever have a great/classic match?

He does have great matches, but Ted DiBiase certainly has to have the fewest great matches of anyone of his reputation level as a worker.

DiBiase is a good shout.
So is Jake Roberts.

What criteria are we using for “greatest” wrestler? Accomplishments? Workrate? Visibility?
I love Booker T but I wouldn’t ever really describe him as a great wrestler in the strict sense of the word. Charismatic guy that can have good matches with solid opponents, but not great. I’m interested in others thoughts on that actually.
Maybe the Iron Sheik? Has Jerry Lawler ever had a truly great match?(probably something I’m forgetting with both of those guys though)

Popularity, work rate, achievements, longevity, promotion status, fandom, lasting impact. All the guys mentioned so far would fit the bill of 'great' wrestlers, and would certainly be in any countdown list of 'greatest' wrestlers. Well, perhaps except for Lance Storm. Lance certainly had work rate, achievements, and promotion status having wrestled in all the major feds back in the day. However, he lacks the fandom and lasting impact of Ted Dibiase, Jake Roberts or Booker T.

Outside of Flair, I doubt any of Lawler's American contemporaries have *more* great matches than him.
Sheik has the Boot Camp Match with Slaughter.

How about Tito?
Growing up, he always seemed like a good worker but I can't think of anything really spectacular from him, maybe if he'd had a big blow off with Rick Martel he'd have one.

How about Lance Storm? Very good wrestler but did he ever have a great/classic match? On Lance, Storm was a wrestler limited by his push and position on the card. He was generally in the mid card and didnt have the freedom to put on 15 minute+ bangers. For example his World Championship match on Nitro against Booker T could have potentially been great. The crowd was hot and bought the story going in and they were telling. But the match is quite short and doesnt have the room or space to reach the next level. During most of his WWE run, while his contemporaries in Eddie, Rey and Benoit were having classics on smackdown, he was mostly stuck in the sports entertainment centred Raw stuck in a carousel was non pushed tag teams. That said his match vs Bryan in RoH I would call a great match.

I'd say Kane, great worker, great character but all his matches seem to blend together, nothing too terrible but nothing memorable.

Tito has all those matches with Valentine and Savage which are among the very best of the era, just behind the Boot Camp Match and Savage-Steamboat.

The first person that comes to my mind at that description is Randy Orton.

I think Nattie is a good wrestler and I know people in the industry feel she's a great worker but I can't recall any of her matches being great per se.

How about Lance Storm? Very good wrestler but did he ever have a great/classic match? The Storm/Candido vs Van Dam/Sabu rematch for the tag belts is absolutely off the charts stellar.

Beth Phoenix's farewell match in 2011 is a Top 3 televised women's match of the era. It's on the Best of 2011 set, definitely worth going out of you way to see. Perfect crowd, perfect emotion, perfect match.

There are so many variables here that is so hard to pin point. What constitutes a great match really? Atmosphere such as hot crowd? In-ring work execution? Coherent choreography? Story telling? Storyline? I mean great matches were both Hogan vs Andre and Macho vs Steamboat but for very different reasons.
But if we just want to keep it simple it's probably Ultimate Warrior. But then again was he ever a great wrestler in sense of wrestling? No. Was he a megastar in wrestling world? Yes. So he is one of the greatest ever superstars that have ever graced the ring but he was just not that great of a wrestler.
