The latest in EoE's TV-binging adventures, I've just been obsessed with this show for like the last month, to the point where it now holds my personal record for most TV seasons bought on DVD in a single purchase (all 11 seasons in one go... Surprisingly, it was not on ANY of the streaming services available here in Australia, but that's another issue).
How does this show hold up in the 2020s? Oddly enough, there are things that got complained about back then that nobody would blink an eye at today, while there's other stuff that would be undisputedly be considered problematic that got met with the ubiquitous hooting and hollering that the live studio audience became known for.

I'm a big fan but it's a show it took me awhile to develop a taste for since you really need to get a feel for how meanspirited its sense of humor is plus how it's simultaneously much smarter than it seems and also very stupid. It has a lot of material that hasn't aged great for sure, but still a pretty big fan and if I catch it on I'll watch it provided it isn't one of the super early episodes before the show really found its footing. Even though it noticeably dipped in quality as it went along it still remains mostly very watchable.
That said I feel like it'd feel way more gross if it wasn't such a ridiculous cartoon. Being so big and over-the-top kind of makes it easy to overlook a lot of the more gross aspects but if it were toned down a bit it'd be so much worse to look back at.

Does the DVD release come with "Love And Marriage" opening theme?
I still remember, when I bought TV series on DVD, that the second season Set, had some instrumental music instead which confused the heck out of me.

The ones I got had it for Season 1 and 2, but not the rest. I believe a later US re-release had the Sinatra theme for all seasons.

There is an unusually casual episode about Peggy going dancing with a man, and that man's husband going to Al for help since he feels neglected due to this. Al seems pretty on-board with it, and other than a "They're homos" said very casually to Peggy later, which isn't great, he definitely seemed cooler about it than a previous episode with him calling a stereotypical gay man a queen.
In any case, it's a show I don't take too seriously since everyone is a cartoon. Speaking of, half surprised Fox has never attempted to revive it as a cartoon at this point.

The husband being played by Dan “Homer Simpson” Castellaneta, of all people. FOX better be sending him and Ed O’Neill fruit baskets in perpetuity for getting their network off the ground. Speaking of, half surprised Fox has never attempted to revive it as a cartoon at this point. Or any sort of revival in this streaming age. I think a main issue is that one of the co-creators passed away, so there might be some issue in terms of who has the authority to green light such a thing.

Loved this show growing up as a kid, it didn't really occur to me how racy it was till I watched part of it again recently (Marcy's random fantasy monologues were something else)
Super funny show

*flushes toilet*
I used to watch reruns sometimes as a kid, I tried as an adult but the audience is too obnoxious. I'd actually rather have a Disney/Nickelodeon style fake laughter than people screaming.

With Fox selling its assets to Disney, it would be up to them for any potential revival. And with them having The Simpsons, Family Guy, et all, would reviving Married With Children be redundant?

Marcy’s a f***in’ FREAK, man. Like, I’d heard of the show and the characters before this but never really watched it before, so all I’d known off the top of my head was her essentially being a “Karen”, a wet blanket for all of Al’s schemes. Obviously she’s still that, but that other side of her character absolutely kills me.

The ones I got had it for Season 1 and 2, but not the rest. I believe a later US re-release had the Sinatra theme for all seasons. The Mill Creek release did have the theme, but on seasons 3-10 (season 11 is fine), they simply dubbed the audio of the season 1-2 intro into it. That caused the "clang" sound effect to be heard during Katey Sagel's credit, not when the show logo appeared. The song being gone also caused the closing credits to be edited on the Sony DVD sets to remove the "Love and Marriage" credit on seasons 4-11, affecting episodes where a tag scene played out. You either got the scene's audio only or a still of the scene with music over it rather than the scene itself. On the Mill Creek set, some of those scenes were restored while others weren't.

One of my favorite shows ever. I’m in probably the extreme minority that wish it went longer.
Also, Al’s shoot on the librarian in that one episode is top notch stuff:

"Uh, no Peg."

Imagine pitching this show to networks today You'd need Seth MacFarlane to come up with it as he is one of the few who gets a pass to be as out there and outrageous as possible.

Al’s savage insults towards the shoe store customers is the best part of the show!
“Aren’t you open?”
“Sorry Ma’am but unlike you’re mouth we occasionally close” 😂

Such a weird, dark, hateful, cynical show. There's never been anything else like it. I've never seen something that so openly and blatantly simultaneously panders to its viewers and despises them. I'm legit not sure if I think it's the worst thing ever or if I respect it.
One thing is very clear though: The entire cast is fabulous. Even Ted McGinley. To the extent the thing is even watchable, much less endearing, is a herculean feat. Ed O'Neill is just fantastic.
