Just looking at Raw’s ratings, here are the average ratings through his run on top: 2004: 3.67 2005: 3.81 2006: 3.90 2007: 3.61 2008: 3.27 2009: 3.57 2010: 3.28 2011: 3.21 2012: 3.00 2013: 3.01 Cena wasn't on top, or on Raw, in 2004.

I think it's there for comparison's sake, to show the difference Cena made on RAW in 2005. And obviously there was an increase. It should also be noted that WrestleMania 21 was a massive success, built around the title chases of Cena and Batista. Just to note. That said, I do need to point out that, despite being into stats analysis, ratings and buyrates, I don't fully believe in the idea of one man drawing in the modern era of televised wrestling, but anyhoo.

Cena is an extremely charismatic and clearly was the right choice to be top guy. The problem I think is more that the negative live audience reaction to Cena did not prompt any change in his alignment - and it marks the beginning of wwe stubbornly not listening to the crowd. That aspect is what led to Roman Reigns not turning heel for far longer than anyone could reasonably argue was justifiable. So it wasn’t Cena himself that was the thing that drove people away, but WWE’s failure to respond to his rejection as a babyface from a large portion of the audience. That was the catalyst. They didn't react to him getting negative reactions and there was no undercard for most of his run on top to give people little else to care about. You had world championship contenders, future contenders, former contenders and nothing, nothing else mattered and the booking team seemed to take great pleasure driving that point home. It reminds me of when the bottom fell out of WCW, they gutted the undercard in terms of talent and booking, the something for everyone approach evaporated, nobody was elevated and guys were fodder for main eventers and the main event angle would be pushed throughout their matches.

I know, I was doing that to show the difference from the year prior to him joining Raw, which was in June 2005.

There's also a line of correlation that could be traced between WWE's slow decline as of 2002, Cena's supremacy over WWE's main event scene from 2005-2010, and the burgeoning popularity of UFC in the mid-2000s.
Those driven-off fans had to go somewhere. They didn't just disappear like WCW's audience did in 2001.

Bad booking for the past dozen years drove the fans away.
Nothing more, nothing less.

He's the reason I stopped watching for years.

Cena was the start of why I stopped watching and for the most part whenever he was on screen I just wanted him to lose. Its only at the very very end of his career that I could stomach him in small doses
