Big Show replacing Austin at Survivor Series 1999.
It went from HHH/Rock/Austin, which could've potentially been one of the best main events of the attitude era, to the show ending with the world title on a guy who was wrestling Mideon and Viscera in a nothing match earlier in the night.
He got good at certain points during his WWE career but 1999 Big Show completely sucked. Out of shape and just constantly having terrible matches. I don't know whether or not it's an urban legend about him having a clause in his contract guaranteeing him a world title reign and Wrestlemania main event but it wouldn't be a massive shock to me because I can't think why else they would give him those after his performances in 99/2000. He wasn't even really over either. He felt like a midcard champion. Thankfully he dropped the title fairly quickly.

Don't think any can be worse than Savio. Still an entertaining match, but yeah, Savio?!

He wasn't even really over either. He felt like a midcard champion. Thankfully he dropped the title fairly quickly. It's an urban legend in almost all certainty. They wanted to groom him to a big star for mainly three reasons: one, he was probably being paid a lot, and they wanted to justify that. Two, they felt he had potential, and he frankly did, since obviously he got very over with time when they figured out how to use him correctly. And three, and this is probably the big one: Austin, Foley, and Undertaker were all breaking down, and Vince was probably deeply concerned about getting stars to rise to fill the void back when he actually had to care about that.

Not a match, but: Especially since they waited til the last second and basically had Flair say, "Tully's not here," in a very throwaway fashion.

For some reason, my mind went to Michael Hayes being replaced by "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers for a match with Van Hammer at Halloween Havoc.

Doug Gilbert replacing JYD at WrestleWar 89 Similar vein, Junkyard Dog replacing Nikita Koloff at Starrcade 1988.

Jack Victory replaces Dennis Condrey, negating the whole Midnight Express vs. Original Midnight Express feud. (Chi-Town Rumble) Mike Enos with a mask replaces Dan Spivey. (Wrestle War '90) I'd imagine that the Crockett Cup had a lot.

Don't think any can be worse than Savio. Still an entertaining match, but yeah, Savio?! Well it made sense because the Boricuas were doing DX's dirty work on Raw. But as a surprise partner...meh. There's the other surprise partner letdown from 2 years prior: Jimmy Snuka on Team Yokozuna at SurSer '96. But that wasn't a replacement per se. I guess it wasn't awful, but the Samoans replacing the Skyscrapers at Starrcade '89.

I can’t imagine being Jake Roberts and taking the ring with DQ prone Jim Duggan as my co-captain to lead Tito Santana, ancient Ken Patera, and jobber Scott Casey to take on Andre the Giant, Dino Bravo, Rick Rude, Mr Perfect, and Harley Race. I would’ve turned heel right there. I always wondered how these teams were supposedly created in kayfabe. Were we supposed to think there was recruiting going on backstage? Did Jack Tunney assign captains, and then those captains had to go find others in the locker room to join their teams? Or were the whole teams put together by "officials," who also handled the assigning of substitutes? Interesting to picture Jake having intense discussions with Duggan. "You hate Andre, and I also hate Andre. Who should we get, man? How about the Hart Foundation? What? They're in the 20-man match? Oh. Well, what about Hercules? Oh. He's on Hogan's team? Shit. Who's left? Patera? Are you serious? Uh. This isn't looking good, man." And then on the day of the show: "Where's Blair? Anyone seen Blair? Tell me there's SOMEONE else besides Scott Casey."

I wondered if there was a draft or something. But if there were, you'd have so assume some pretty shoddy Captain's selections some years. Like in 1990, Volkoff had to have picked Tito Santana or the Bushwhackers when there was still a ton of talent on the board. I just imagine all the Captains sitting at the draft. Warrior picks LOD, Dibiase picks the Mystery option, Hogan picks his buddy Tugboat, Mr Perfect picks all three Demolition, and then Volkoff blurts out "The Bushwhackers!". All the heads snap up. Jack Tunney says "Are you sure?". "Yes". Then all the other captains laugh at the noob captain wasting his first pick.

While they never outright said it, they always implied DiBiase was paying guys to be on his team, with bonus money when they won, they did say that last part.

Also in 1991, Brian Knobbs replaces the Honky Tonk Man in the Royal Rumble. I don’t even think the Nasty Boys had even debuted on TV at that point. Gorilla and Roddy didn't really seem to know who he was. Was his real name ever mentioned or was just referred to as "The Nasty Boy?" Sags had a dark match with Sam Houston which is also strange. Why not try to get both guys in the match since they would be on TV together soon. Or put Mountie in a match and have Nasty Boys dark match Houston and Koko.

Right. 'Taker was on hiatus, Austin was gonna be out for a year and Foley in his second book talks about how he actually went to Vince and was attempting to retire right around SS, or in the couple weeks after. (I forget the exact timeline) Around that time, yeah, with him mainly staying due to belief Austin might be retiring, and that the company would need him a little longer, and that no one was going to care about his retiring if Austin did it at the same time. He had gone to Vince and told him his body was breaking down, and began telling him about memory problems he had when Vince told him, "You just wrestled your last match" and was willing to let him retire then and there, but they both decided to hold off on it.

I wonder considering what we know now about concussions, if Foley would have been forced to retire right there and then.
