Pyscho "3rd Time is the Charm" Sid was a great wildcard in '96-'97.
Crazy to think he had been a main event feature twice, in separate runs, up to this point. His first title win was perfect in regards to his WWF arc.

As you can see by my avatar and my name it's definitely the Sid Justice 91-92 run. It was definitely a run of wasted potential and ended up amounting to a "what could've been" type deal but what we got was so great. I really loved his initial face "good is not soft" character. Like yeah he's this big do gooder who comes to the rescue of damsels in distress like Miss Elizabeth ("All I can say is THANK GOD FOR SID JUSTICE"-Every babyface announcer on WWF television after recapping the Summerlam 91 wedding reception in September 1991) and Mike McGuirk but at the same time is also super intense and will completely destroy you in a heartbeat if you get out of line. He was basically like Hulk Hogan with an edge plus much more athletic and explosive in the ring. He wasn't a great wrestler but everything he did looked awesome. The flying tackle in the corner, the one hand chokesleam, the whirly twirl slam, the powerbomb. Made his squash matches a ton of fun. Making Big Bully Busick his complete b**ch and just utterly destroying when him and Wippleman were bullying Mike McGuirk stands out as a great one. He also had another fun squash against the Mountie at MSG right before he turned heel. Also his theme song was freaking great. Just the perfect bad ass babyface them that just screamed someone was going to their s**t wrecked. It really sucks that he got injured and had to pulled out of Survivor Series 1991. That really would've been a good showcase for him and I think lost some momentum as a result. Then they turned him heel and while his heel run was fun I just didn't think it was a good use of him. He should've been the heir apparent to Hogan but him being kind of flaky in real life was probably going to prevent that from happening even if they stayed the course with him as face. The thing with Sid though is almost every run he had was really good. Great in the Skyscrapers, great as the loose cannon muscle of the Horsemen in 90-91, great as Sid Justice in 91-92, great in his WCW 93 heel run, great in his 96-97 WWF World Champion run, great as the Millenium Man (which I think is his most underrated run. Him doing random run ins and beating up guys backstage and pinning them and having his own ref count the pin so he could catch up to Goldberg's record quicker was hilarious). Really the only weak run he had was his 95-96 heel run in WWF and even that while not great had it's moments. You're so right about babyface Sid Justice. I hadn't really thought about it, but they could have gotten a lot more mileage out of that. In the end, even if they'd gone that route, Sid is still gonna be Sid, but he was so over that it was a shame to turn him heel so fast just to match against Hogan at WM. According to Kevin Nash Vince was going to give Sid "the keys to the Kingddom" and give him Hogan's spot. However Sid didn't want it and wanted to be a heel. Turning down such a lucrative position that would come with so much money is something I don't think anyone else would've done. I'm guessing Sid didn't want all the stress and responsibility that would come with being the guy and figured that as the top heel while he wouldn't be making as much money and not be in a lucrative position he would still be in a real good spot and still making great money while not having to deal with all the stuff that comes with being the lead face like media appearances and all that. Still though turning down an offer like that does come off as really dumb on his part. I get not being thrilled with the all the things that come with it but that's one of those once in a lifetime opportunities that you would have to be a fool not to take.

In some ways, his final WCW run was his most entertaining just in terms of how much he leaned into being ridiculous. That's the weird thing, everything around him was drizzling shits but Sid looked good as champ

Have to vote for Sid Justice purely for the Jimmy Hart theme. I know Jimmy recycled the riff with slight variations in multiple songs, and it's simple as hell, but it's got a beat-em-up boss fight quality that suited the big lug perfectly.

It's weird with Sid because in shoot interviews like a lot of the times he comes off like a normal nice enough guy and then he'll say stuff like that where it makes you think that his gimmick of "Sycho" Sid was more of a shoot. Saying he thought Wrestlemania was house show is just such a ridiculous statement that means he's either legit crazy, incredibly stupid, or is just being a carny. Like yeah because all house shows are held in giant football stadiums with 60,000 people in them and Wrestlemania banners everywhere,

I met Sid at an autograph show in 2017. He was very quiet but very nice and respectful. He kind of had to be told what to do for each person, almost like the assistant was talking to a child or ill, elderly person. It seemed like he needed direction with what to do. I don't think it's a CTE issue because he's probably always been like that. When he's not on TV he's so much more dialed back.
I have no doubt, if he says he didn't know he was at Wrestlemania, that he didn't know he was at Wrestlemania. He also probably no shows more shows that any other celebrity ever and he always has a reason. And yet he does show for other promoters, sometimes works with the same guys (K&S-Ken and Steve) so who knows why he no shows some/cancels and does for others? He does seem to enjoy being at the shows, he is respectful to the fans and always stands for photos. And for the coolest thing I saw was how humbled and respectful he was when going out of his way to talk with one of the other wrestlers.

That 96/97 Sid run was crazy good in retrospect. Because he was feuding with HBK (who took him to arguably some of his best matches) and also partially because the US work rate style was getting faster, he was under appreciated in how effective a believable monster character he was.
Even during his ādumb Sidā moments in 1999 WCW, he was a super charismatic heel, and it was always fun watching Goldberg as the hero foiling his plans.

His match with Bret at the December 96 PPV isn't talked about much, but I remember that being good as well. And add me to the list that loved his late 99/first few months of 2000 WCW run. He was a bright spot in a sea of awful nonsense

Another fan of face Sid Justice here. I agree with everything that's already been said about that run. So much potential missed, but what we got was great. A total badass face that you could put your faith in. That brilliant "...justice will be served" line. Great, intense promos. Like, it always confused me when people brought up Sid as a bad promo, but I guess that's based off that one "half a brain" WCW promo. The Sid I knew was great on the mic, totally believable (and terrifying once he turned heel and became master and ruler of the world).
I also think he looked a bit bigger during this run than in his later WWF runs and I preferred his look with the longer hair and coloured trunks. Just awesome.

I think Sid had an old school mentality of trying to keep his stock up, and he seemed to think that, being the big guy, it wasn't like they would be able to keep him face long effectively. Diesel would prove that point. It also seemed to be part of why he'd go from one company to the next. Part of it was stuff like the Arn altercation or him blowing off stuff to play softball, but he also wanted to stay special and didn't want to become just one of the guys. He is a bit of an odd man, to say the least, but he was also surprisingly savvy on that front.

Yeah, though Sid has also said that the Russo-era "Sid says stupid stuff" thing was something Russo got him to do and I think Hall and Nash didn't know to expect stuff like the "half a brain" promo, which I could buy given they did legitimately look amused even while deep in not-giving-a-f*** territory. He was definitely more game than he had to be, but I guess Russo at least pushed him in return for it.
