Should have been called Guenther Steiner, so he could be part time Steiner brother, part time terrible but hilarious F1 team boss. Oh God, we already have enough trouble with this matter without getting the f***ing Mazepins tangentially involved.

Those Complaints aside (and TBF they used only the first name now...and even so they did tweak the Viking Experience thing for far less...), I fear to be careful what you complain about. Because they can take this in a new direction. Keep the Gunther name, and make him That 90s Guy, pining for Jennifer Aniston still.

The Spinning Mazepin will be his new finisher, and Imperium will be renamed as 'A Bunch of Wankers'.

Even if they didn't mean to name him after a Nazi, there are countless other names they could have thought up that would work better. Two seconds of research or market testing might have saved them any headaches.

So, we got people defending WWE for using the name of actual Nazis when they could've, you know, used Google for literally two seconds.
Okay.
People will rip off their gloves and defend WWE for ANYTHING.

It'll be retooled to Starks and he will proclaim his little brother Ricky is being held hostage by the other company

Im surprised it cleared legal, I recall watching 2.0 talking about the adventure they had named their NXT tag team name and how much of a hassle it was.

It's worth noting he doesn't wrestle using his full name, Just his first.

You really should have kept this opinion to yourself. Justifying giving someone a Nazi's name when you could just, y'know, easily NOT give someone a Nazi's name, is a real bad look. And suggesting that Google is to blame for people disliking a man being given a Nazi's name is just straight bullshit. Stop. Also, f*** this company and everything they do. Yes, f*** this company. Also, no, I am not going to pretend that a common German name is "a Nazi's name" because somebody nobody had heard of before yesterday was a Uboat commander. The guy is not notable enough to even have a Wikipedia page. There are tons of Gunther Starks, including several more notable ones than an obscure submarine commander, who actually have (German) wikipedia articles. It is not "a Nazi's name", it is just a name. Any common German name is "a Nazi's name" by this inane standard. You are outraged over literally nothing, and worse, you have let that blind you to the fact that it is a) a common name, and b) Gunther and Günther are not even the same damn name. They are not pronounced the same. So, given that, now your already absurd standard becomes "anything that is even similar to the name of any of the literally millions of people who were in the German armed forces in WWII is off the table", which is a) insane, and b) not a standard applied to anything else. If a wrestler is named Robert E Lee, then that's probably worth some blowback. If a wrestler is named "Samuel Clayton" which happens to be the name of some obscure Confederate cavalry officer who was shot in his first battle, then unless their gimmick is "confederate guy" I'm pretty comfortable in writing it off as a coincidence and not falling all over myself to show off how OUTRAGED I am. Despite the fact WWE is stupid, evil, and racist, there is not a shred of credibility to the idea that this was deliberately "a Nazi name". They do enough things to make people upset in reality, there is no need to make more up. You are really, REALLY defending a multi-billion dollar company for not being bothered to Google a name and find out they shouldn't use it because Nazis. I particularly like how you say the WWE is "stupid, evil, and racist", yet still defend them for using an actual Nazi's name. You're a special kinda special.

Ok so I'll say my piece on this;
It's difficult to come up with a German-sounding name without also finding someone with the same name affiliated with the Nazi party (Without going into it for obvious reasons, It was a large portion of the population).
That being said I would have gone with just Mr.Günther (I Dunno if that can be trademarked).
or
And hear me out, Avoid all of that and let him be the name everyone knows him as because it's clown shoes to randomly rename him after he's already established

I detest WWE, haven't watched them for years, and will never give them money again. They are a scummy company run by a man who should be in jail. But I don't buy into manufactured outrage that isn't based in reality. WWE did not use "the name of actual Nazis". They trademarked a German name. Any common non-Jewish male German name, demonstrably including Walter's actual birth name, is very likely also going to be the name of someone who was among the millions of people who served in the wartime German military. That's just how it is. It was dumb of them to not google the name before they trademarked it (or to assume nobody would care, because the internet runs on manufactured outrage), but "dumb" is all it is. We already know WWE is dumb and doesn't google names, thanks to the Submission Sorority. It makes literally no sense to pretend this was anything other than that, and you don't need to like WWE to realise that. They didn't go looking through a book of WWII history looking for the most obscure name of an officer they could find so they could try to sneak a "Nazi" reference by the unsuspecting public. They're just idiots.

WWE essentially failed the basic rule when naming a character: do the research.

You said it yourself, they've done this in the past. That makes them 100% in the wrong for doing it. Yes, they used a Nazi name. They could've looked it up, and didn't, so that makes them responsible for it. They do not deserve defense.

I'm saying "this is almost certainly what happened, because it makes sense". The truth matters more than posturing about Nazis for valuable internet points, or even better, making nasty insinuations about the character of people who don't buy into absurd conspiracy theories and just think WWE picked a name they thought sounded cool and didn't google it, something they have literally done before more than once.

Their thought process went no further than 'Give me a name we can trademark'. He isn't defending it though, lets not get accusatory.

AND I HAVE BEEN A SLAVE, TO THE WALTER IN MY MIND IS THERE SOMETHING LEFT TO SAVE IN THE WRECKAGE OF YOUR LIFE, YOUR LIFE
YOU'RE BECOME YOU'RE BECOME YOU'RE BECOMING YOU'RE BECOME YOU'RE BECOME YOU'RE BECOMING

It is not a defence to say the truth. It is just the goddamn truth. They trademarked (didn't even use) a name that is similar but not identical to that of an obscure WWII submarine commander, but also happens to be a reasonably common German name, and they almost certainly just hadn't checked when they trademarked it. Then they either checked later or preemptively decided they hated Stark for whatever reason and had him call himself "Gunther". Calling that a tempest in a teapot is an insult to teapot tempests, which could at least scald someone. I'm sorry that in this one particular specific instance it is pretty clear that WWE are just dumb and not actively malevolent, but next week I'm sure they'll fire someone for having cancer or something and we can bask in the warm glow of hating them when they actually deserve it.
