So, having an opinion on anything is now considered gatekeeping? No its gatekeeping when folks shame people that like CBM and keep telling the fans of the MCU they're contributing to the downfall of cinema. Not the fans. The studios. They're only making blockbusters because THEY know that's the only way they can make money. This means sequels, prequels and reboots galore. The episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" where they are chosen to offer feedback on a new Thundergun movie offers quite a bit of insight into why studios are doing this. Piracy is one reason.

If the studios are making blockbusters that people actually enjoy, rather it be sequels, prequels and reboots. and are willing to spend money on and come out of the theatre satisfied what’s the issue? Fans are happy. studio makes money. Sure, you don’t like superhero movies, that’s fine. Don’t watch them. But hoping for the whole genre to die because you hate it is absolutely ridiculous and selfish

I never explicitly wished for the death of any genre.

The MCU is basically like modern wrestling. Not always for me but immensely entertaining to see old timers get upset by it rather than embrace it.

But again, that's not the fault of superhero movies in and of themselves, but again, it's a dark road we're heading down.

So the solution: more Oscar bait, depressing slave and holocaust films and stuffy documentaries for everyone! Let’s go!

So the solution: more Oscar bait, depressing slave and holocaust films and stuffy documentaries for everyone! Let’s go! /s We’re not lamenting the lack of “Oscar bait” at the movies. It’s that any movie that isn’t gonna make like a billion dollars is probably not gonna get made. There’s rarely any mainstream movies with original concepts or that are just straight up weird. It’s possible to enjoy comic book movies and also acknowledge that the film industry being obsessed with them is stifling other artistic endeavors.

Yeah, like it'd be fun to have a world where someone like Christopher Lloyd can be in Back to the Future and Clue in the same year again, and both movies can get nationwide theatrical releases.

Y'all should have gone to see Last Night in Soho and Nobody. Both of those were great.

Y'all should have gone to see Last Night in Soho and Nobody. Both of those were great. I am mostly open to seeing whatever. I was interested in seeing both of them but missed the boat. Hell, Nobody was showing at the same time I went to see Mortal Kombat. I did end up watching it, but that would have been cool to see in theaters. I am going to try watching Last Night in Soho at some point.

Y'all should have gone to see Last Night in Soho and Nobody. Both of those were great. I watched Nobody the other night and really enjoyed it. I was expecting it to take itself seriously, but was pleasantly surprised how fun it was. Had a very old school action movie vibe with its humor.

Nothing about movies is going to change when we live in a world in which people care more about Spider-Man nostalgia than their health and their very lives while in a pandemic.

Let me put it like this: I’m not asking that characters like John Walker from “Falcon and The Winter Soldier” should be banned or not written about or anything. They’re fine now and then. But I will defend someone like, say, Tony Stark on being a rich guy who’s shown to care about people, or Batman with his cash and gadgets teaming with Gordon as a vigilante. Those types of heroes should still be able to thrive. They have been thriving though. For years. I loved marvel comics when I was younger cuz they managed to have smart (sometimes a little hamfisted) social commentary and superheroes fighting aliens and shit. These movies have completely sterilized that. Any social commentary in them is very surface level and half assed. You could say I’m expecting a lot from a big budget franchise backed by one of the most evil corporations, but idk, I just think it sucks. Gee, thanks for implying that some of my favorite animated movies of all time are “evil”. So I have to feel guilty for going back to watch not just the Avengers, but Lion King? Are the writers and artists who put all that work into entertaining millions of people evil too? Because big company bad? That doesn’t put me in the Last Night In Soho mood, man.

I realize I'm part of the problem here but I'd generally rather if I'm going to see a movie spend my time on something that I have some level of certainty in, though that's probably just the same part of me that would rather spend an hour trying to find something to watch than spend a half hour watching something I might potentially not like.
Kind of same when it comes to games really. Pretty rare I try out new series and I'd generally rather just play the same old games over and over again.

And it’s not like MCU films are mindless junk, they will touch on important themes now and then, like Winter Soldier taking a stand against government surveillance, Black Panther’s anti war stance, etc.
I’d rather rewatch stuff like that over some of the hyper serious and slow moving material IndieWire squeals over.
And again, I say this as someone who loves movies period and does want to see more variety on the big screen. But I’m sorry, if a big studio puts out something that I think looks fun, they’re getting my money because I like to have fun watching movies. If that makes me a corporate sellout, then I’m putting on the suit and tie.
