Honestly I tend to find most romantic subplots in action movies to be completely superfluous anyway so I'm perfectly fine with deemphasizing them.

Deadpool and Vanessa had like a 10 minute long scene of the two f***ing... And the first depiction of pegging in a superhero movie, to boot.

Thing is they do have superfluous romantic subplots in the movies anyway, just with no actual zest to them, just like "Oh, well, I guess we should pair these characters together in a generic heteronormative way". (See: Black Widow/Hulk, Sharon Carter/Captain America, etc.)

With Sharon, I fully believe they were gonna build that to be THE romance like the books, then saw how MCU fans really wanted him to be with Peggy and wisely changed course.

I mean also talking about sex... the Guardians of the Galaxy mention sex pretty consistently.
one of Star-lrod's first jokes is that there's so much uh... fluid in the ship that it would look like a Pollock painting...
Gamora's line about Pelvic Sorcery...
Drax I think mentions or has mentioned his "prowess" at one point.
Groot openly pollinates on screen! >_> (ok that was a joke)

There are plenty of superhero movies or TV shows that have romance but no sex. There are also many superhero movies or TV shows that have sex but no romance.
However, what most of these lack is intimacy--how romance can lead to sex and sex can lead to romance.
Batman can love Rachel Dawes. Sersi can have sex with Ikaris. But neither of these relationships seem that intimate and balanced between romance and sex compared to Deadpool or Superman II.

Let's be clear here, I don't think this move would have done that much better if there wasn't a pandemic to blame low box office sales on. The first time I saw the trailer, I thought this should've gone straight to streaming. The premise "what if the moon up and attacked the Earth" is about on par with Sharknado, and only makes the preceding discourse that much funnier in hindsight. Campion and Scorsese can look down on comic book movies. They're very serious directors who make very serious movies. The guy who made Moonfall. the first box office bomb of 2022? Not so much.

Statistically? Never to this degree. There’s never been an era where there’s been less variety in genres made available in wide theatrical release. I'd say a changing media landscape, increasing studio consolidation, the shift to streaming and covid have a lot to do with everyone becoming even more risk averse rather than one genre crushing all comers. The big pillars of the cinema of yesterday are subsidiaries of others and the past decade is filled with failed attempts at making blockbusters in other genres, look at The Lone Ranger, John Carter, The Dark Universe films, Cats... Well, don't look at that one, the goggles do nothing. There's one more big factor: money, more specifically, the lack thereof. Simply put, Americans (and probably everyone else, I'm sure) have a lot less money for leisure nowadays. I was going to the movies maybe once every couple of months BEFORE the pandemic, and theaters are dirt cheap here (most I've ever paid is like $16 for a prime time IMAX showing). And if there's one thing the Walt Disney Coproration has done better than everyone else in the industry since before I was born, it's make movies that are Fun For The Whole Family™. Until that you-know-what increases to meet the cost of living, those family nights at the theater are gonna continue to be a three-or-four times a year thing, and those are the movies the theater chains are gonna prioritize, because those are the movies keeping the lights on.

I mean they do show things like Pepper and Tony having a daughter that must have been concieved like as soon as Tony returned from space... and the like. Most of the Hero movies usually have a ticking clock aspect so them stopping for a quickie would seem wildly out of character. Unless it's a pre-hero/pre-crisis event like a lot of Iron Man and Deadpool's parts. And they tried showing some romantic aspects to Ikaris and Sersi but they didn't dwell too much on it since A. the movie was packed as it was and B. {Spoiler}ultimately you aren't supposed to like Ikaris

And ultimately superhero stuff is (and should be) accessible to kids; not necessarily aimed at, but accessible to.
There are outliers like The Boys, Deadpool etc, but generally at most you'd wanna imply sex ala Superman II or something in superhero fare.
Or, like I've said before, if your Superman movie has to be Rated R, you've failed at making a Superman movie.

This isn't like the '80s to mid-'90s where almost every action movie had the male and female leads take some time to raw dog each other. Also, despite the timey-wimey shenanigans it took to make it happen, I felt the Steve and Peggy romance as a whole was very satisfying. The two of them slow dancing in Peggy's living room at the end of Endgame is a better payoff than seeing them in bed.

Big budget cgi blockbusters have kind of helped kill the industry. It used to be you made a big action movie so you could make your smaller dramatic movies. Now the only movies other than the marvel/fast/MI/007/DC that get much effort or screen time is horror. Which I’m not complaining about. I’m only interested in horror at this point. But I can’t really even think of what comedy has had a good theatrical run since the 2010’s.
People have had to take their stories to streaking because studios only care about big budget blockbusters. Which is why Roland still gets to make movies, because until moonfall his crap was very profitable world wide.

MCU movies don't have sex scenes because they simply aren't needed for the story.
Jane Campion should ask Benedict Cumberbatch about superhero movies.
