Meanwhile, Disney is looking at the billions upon billions of dollars that Marvel has made for them and letting whatever Roland Emmerich says go in one ear and out the other.

I'll never get the 'comic book movies aren't original' complaints, as if every comic book movie is 100% lifted frame for frame from the source material. The interconnected plotlines and characters can be exhausting for some people, but a lot of people greatly enjoy the effort put into weaving such massive shared settings.
If it means less shitty disaster movies (NOW we're talking unoriginal), then boo hoo
Oh, and Chritopher Nolan's movies have been spiraling out of control for about a decade now. Tenet was a near unwatchable mess for myself.

Roland "Has spent his entire career making the same movie over and over" Emmerich is really in a position to talk about originality.

Yeah, the dipshit who made Godzilla 1998 isn't allowed to say what is and isn't ruining anything.

I adore Nolan too, but this is more Boomer Director Rants.
You should have got mad about this back in 1978 with Superman and A New Hope Episode IV.

Like most things in this country its capitalism. The studios keep merging and buying each other out becoming bigger and bigger. The bigger they get the bigger their movies have to be to sustain them. So they only want guaranteed huge successes. That means franchises and remakes.

Whenever I hear these complaints, it always sounds more like "I'm mad I wasn't asked to be involved". Like, I get it, opinions and all, but come on.

You know what’s ruining the movie industry? Movie theater seats. Unless you pay out the ass for those fancy chairs. Don’t get me started on the concession stands.

I have enjoyed some of Roland Emmerich's films. Some more than others that some consider sacrilege, like White House Down, but he almost sounds like Martin Scorsese here. Independence Day is a dumb fun movie that made lots of money back in the day. The second one, however, wasn't so good.

I’m sorry, is the guy who made a Godzilla movie so awful that Japan bought the rights to it just so they could canonize it as a fake and then had the real Godzilla kill it, talking about other people ruining things?

I am so, so f***ing tired of hearing shitty directors complain about comic book movies and big franchises. The whole industry's changing - there are so, so many TV shows right now that maybe 20-25 years ago would have been movies. It's not that comic book movies are ruining the big screen, it's that the whole industry is changing.

Gotta love how my local theater just installed 100% electric recliner fancy chairs and the most expensive ticket is $6 My wife and I can go there and get popcorn and drinks and sit in those chairs for less than 20 bucks total.

At least when these boomer movie rants came from other directors, they were great auteurs of the field. Scorsese is one of the best directors of all time. Scott's made some great films back in the day.
This is like Paul W.S. Anderson complaining about movies where the directors cast their spouses as the lead role.

A reminder, this man is about to release a movie where the moon turns evil and is trying to kill the Earth.

Yeah, and I definitely want more “mid tier budget movies” in the multiplexes, but we’re in an era right now where the big tentpoles are what draws people to theaters and many studios can get their money and distribution through streams, so it kinda is what it is. So long as people have interesting ideas and people look for new stuff, who knows? The next big film trend may surprise everyone.

A reminder, this man is about to release a movie where the moon turns evil and is trying to kill the Earth. I've often thought that Emmerich is likely a great B movie director that somehow keeps getting blockbuster level budgets. The "less is more" approach would have helped a lot of his movies morph from CGI-fest to having time for an actual plot and story.
