As a tangentially related aside, Independence Day: Resurgence may be the one movie I'd actually say I wish was a straight remake versus a clunky belated sequel. Though even that I'm not sure because I feel the 1996 model effects still would've ended up looking better.
Also, is it just me or did a bunch of movies around that time all get a discount on CGI of cities shattering and slowly being lifted into the air as their main disaster setpiece? You had that, X-Men Apocalypse, I think one of the later Transformers flicks, and I think a few I'm forgetting.

Every Roland Emmerich movie ever... the earth is being destroyed by x, we are shown this by destruction of [popular tourist landmark(s)] ... usually there is a scientist that no one believes that ends up saving the day.

That reminds me of the one thing in Independence Day that drives me nuts: *massive ships are in the sky blowing up entire cities. The world is in ruins. People are fleeing for the wilderness*
Some guy says, "I was abducted by aliens" and everybody is still like "lol look at the crazy guy talking about aliens. He's so wacky!" EDIT: But then again *looks around at the world today* ... yeah that was actually realistic. Never mind.

Said scientist is also awkward around people and wears glasses (if not all the time, some of the time).

If you want better blockbusters to be made, try making better movies. Lead by example.

I think he's right. I have ZERO interest in MCU, DC or Star Wars but that is all people I know talk about when it comes to movies.
Those franchises push out smaller films that otherwise would have gotten made.

Roland "Has spent his entire career making the same movie over and over" Emmerich is really in a position to talk about originality. Hey now, that movie where he said Shakespeare was a fraud based on outdated and classist ideas was different...

Motherf***er has a movie in theaters RIGHT NOW where the moon has a CGI monster in it and about to crash into Earth.
Put a cape on Patrick Wilson and it's a superhero movie.
That said, there's some merit to smaller movies being pushed out, but he's definitely not the guy to make that argument. And theaters economically are going to become mostly either blockbuster centric entirely or niche small films for hardcore movie fans.
That was coming one way or another, no matter the dominant genre.

Roland Emmerich is the early 2000s Lars Ulrich of filmmaking. Whatever legitimacy the point he's trying to make is undermined by him being the absolute worst guy to have as the spokesperson.

A reminder, this man is about to release a movie where the moon turns evil and is trying to kill the Earth. That's pretty much the plot of Local Channel 58 and the end to the Dead Space 3 DLC.

After that, I suspect the next movie will be Jurassic World and then….I’ll probably never go to the movies again because I don’t think there’s a single one I have any interest in seeing. I can’t f***ing wait until this superhero fad finally dies.

Mostly stoner flicks like Pineapple Express, which would never be made again thanks to James Franco's creepiness.

I can’t f***ing wait until this superhero fad finally dies. They've pretty much consistently been a draw since Batman in 1989 (and that's being kind of generous since there were the Superman movies before that, and even Superman 3 and 4 made money), it's very hard to call it a fad. Probably the most notable downtime since Batman was, like, the gap between Batman & Robin and X-Men and that was only three years.

I am with Lizuka on this one because superhero movies are far from a fad. Hell, you might as well chalk it up to the late-2000s when the MCU started becoming a thing with Iron Man. I mean, yes, you had a lot of MCU movies coming out during the 2010s, but if you have no interest in them, then don't see them. I mean, seriously, you also had Fox's X-Men movies, which were still going on during the past couple of decades. I remember seeing another user on here complaining about superhero films because, and I quote, "comic books are lame." This was as far back as 2013. Well, one thing that should be of note is that there are movie adaptations of comics that I am certain that people didn't realize were comics at first. For example, Road to Perdition, A History of Violence, 2 Guns, Surrogates, etc.
