That period when Hogan kept saying “nWo-ites.” Also, I remember Booker T trying to make “save the drama for your mama” a thing, but WCW still died. Didn't he also do "Don't hate the playa, hate the game" for a short bit before WCW closed (and I think he did a call-back to it in the Mania 19 build-up)? Yep, though that one I guess was used enough to even be part of the intro for his entrance theme in WCW for a bit, I think. It's been a bit, though.

Anything they gave Benoit, he just was not someone a catchphrase worked with, always sounded forced and lame. "Prove me wrong!" was pretty over when he first entered the main event in WWE in 2000, and dude made it work.

I liked his "prove me wrong" catchphrase during his debuting months with the WWF, it fit his character as the best damn technical wrestler. I remember on an episode of Smackdown in late 2001/early 2002 Booker T countered Austin's "what" with "who," but I don't think it was meant to be a regular thing. Also, in WCW didn't someone in the commentary team try to get Chris Benoit over with the moniker "silent, but violent?" Not very threatening to be equated with a phrase that can be used to describe a fart.

I remember when New Age Outlaws were first getting started, and Road Dog was using the whole "You didn't know" entrance opener. Well, Billy Gunn did it a couple times, but instead of "Your ass better call somebody!", Billy said "You better recognize!" and it was pretty cringey.. I hope I'm not the only one that remembers that. lol I totally remember this. They were in the early days of establishing themselves and thankfully realized Billy's little contribution wasn't working lol. Random memory: unless I'm mistaken, Road Warrior Hawk is the one that coined Billy Gunn as "Mr. Ass" around that time. It was at the DX PPV in December of '97. He addressed the NAO as "Mr. Dogg and Mr. Ass" and it was really funny at the time since he was just going by Bad Ass Billy Gunn. Billy took the moniker and made an ass fetish gimmick out of it, and it got over. So what your saying is that Hawk is responsible for The Ass Boys?

I remember John Cena in like 2005 or 2006 trying to get "back off, jackoff!" over. Didn't last, thankfully.

I would say at least in part, though Billy Gunn deserves most of the credit.

The anthology music cd set really solidified this as THE Bob Holly theme for me.

I'm glad we're mentioning some of the bigger names who this has happened to, showing nobody is 100% immune to failed catchphrases.
During Austin's GM run with Bischoff, he tried to get "put some stank on it" and it didn't really go anywhere.
Jericho at one point, can't remember exactly when, tried to do a call and response with the crowd of him saying "Get it?" The crowd then being prompted to say "got it," followed by him saying "Gooooooood" to end the promo.

I remember years ago seeing some random Rock clip where he was wearing that, and my reaction was pretty much "Wha..?"

I also remember Jericho trying out "downtown to Chinatown" for a little while but it didn't catch on.
A quick Google search suggests he tried it again in AEW a couple of years ago.

Rock and Jericho had a lot. For every time they struck gold they probably had a couple that didn't land. I remember "rooty tooty booty" being one of Jericho's worst around early 2016. I think that may have been bad on purpose though because he knew he was turning heel soon and wanted to sound lame. GFY could be the same idea now. DDP adding the word scum to people's names and also SOL (shit out of luck). "Nexus or against us." CM Punk around 2011-12 really tried to get "clownshoes" over as an insult. "I can, I will" for Roman. "If you don't know, now you know" for Christian. And years later "outwork everyone" was pushed hard for a month or two before they realized it probably wasn't the best phrase to give to someone who doesn't really wrestle all that frequently. Anything they gave Benoit, he just was not someone a catchphrase worked with, always sounded forced and lame. They tried and tried with the "Chris Benoit is 4 Real" one.

GFY was pretty hilarious because Jericho tried to debut it on the same episode where Jon Moxley told a heckler to go f*** himself (possibly the first time we ever heard that word said on a mainstream wrestling show that wasn't a hot mic incident). Like, we heard the uncensored version already so it just made Jericho look like he was trying to leech off Mox's candid moment.

Wasn't this Beyond Boring Mike Sanders' thing? "You're gonna be SOL and you know what that means..." Then him and the NBT's inexplicably quack like a duck afterwards.
I was obsessed with this because SOL makes me think of Satellite of Love. And hey, Mike/Joel was kind of the other SOL when they were shot into space...
Other ones...
Va-Chyna Envy
Speaking of Get It?, John Laurinatis' long-winded phrase belongs here, no?

Don’t know if he ever used it in a promo but the marketers were putting in a lot of effort in “Toothless Aggression” for a while because of his hockey gap.

Would "Y2Cheap" count? That was bad, but I don't know if I'd consider it a catchphrase or not.
