I don't remember that there was a long term storyline. He didn't turn on Dolph. He didn't go on the storyline arc of wanting redemption from the fans.
Did it just happen randomly on WWE TV and then came the Rumble?
Or was the 2020 Rumble Drew's official face turn?

The Rumble was probably his official face turn but he had already been playing to the fans and started the 3...2...1 thing a few weeks beforehand which was getting over.

Pretty much. One week he just started cracking whip on the mic before he squashed, like, No Way Jose or something and that was the start of it.

He knocked Lesnar out of the Rumble and everyone pretty much just said "Yeah this guy is bad ass"
Not everyone needs an official turn IMO.
Drew has been used terribly post-pandemic though.
Having said that, he's miles better as a face. He is so boring as a heel.

It was weird how they wanted Drew as a heel for so long and it just never connected, but he just works well as a face.
Edit I recall people wanting him be a face during his first run too.

He’s big, he’s athletic, he’s charismatic, he’s quite handsome, the only question is why it took as long as it did.

he's still best as a nice bloke you do not want to piss off as he could easily murder you and not think twice about it.
he seems like a nice bloke, and he does look like he could remove a limb or two if he wanted to.

In real life, the second they just let him be himself, he got over like rover.
In kayfabe, I like to think the first crowd to laugh at one of his jokes made him decide to be a good guy. Hah.

He was a face the day he told Ricochet to shut up.

Drew eliminating Brock from the Rumble and staring him down is one of the coolest badass babyface moments of the last several years.

It all felt very much the same as when Batista turned face. He just started doing things people liked and they just started cheering him. With Drew i think the biggest problem was he never showed much personality. Once he started playing to crowd and even doing something so basic like counting down his Claymore led to people gravitating to him

Yeah, even in his first run people were posting promos and matches from his days in the U.K. scene and asking why they couldn't just let him channel he obvious charisma into something crowds would respond to. Everything about his presentation was wrong, from his theme that sucked the life out of the arena (it's a great song, but it's not a good fit for a wrestling theme) to the serious heel cliche of a character they foisted on him. Even when he came back and they made him the "Scottish Pyschopath" it was more or less the same character with a better theme and a more intimidating look. The guy's a born babyface.

"Except for the cheeseburger, you seem like a nice guy actually." No Way Jose should've at least been an over lower card face, but the crowd being happy to see him get his ass kicked was too funny.

In NXT he was the fun loving conga guy most of the time but could be serious and get it done in the ring... he even had a pretty big brawl with Austin Aries where he dropped all of the party stuff... but that's not what Vince wants on the main roster... he's not allowed to not be the party guy even in blood feuds cause that's what his entrance is pal... and you gotta have the same entrance every time... and you have to do the same moves... regardless if it makes sense too or not... cuase those are your spots...

It's still crazy we're bringing this up now because, even for the barely a glimmer it lasted, it was showing that a character like that can have some kind of depth when the situation called for it, even the squash match he had the week after the Aries beating was so visually different. Dude was wrecking that jobber. But like you said, in the main roster, you have a slot. Fit that slot at all times or else. Until you're suddenly expected to not fit that slot without much prep.
