I feel like people should be more mad at the dirtsheets than what WWE was actually advertising on TV. They really didn't build this as a big deal on TV lol.

This reminds me of when I went to “Starrcade” in Cincinnati and only Dean Ambrose tried even a little. Hyped house shows are a bad move. Only gonna disappoint.

Seeing Seth be more over than Roman despite Roman being the golden boy for like 7 years now, was amusing.

Yeah, WWE themselves only mentioned Lesnar defending the belt on this show, they never hyped up some big surprise through RAW or SmackDown or whatever (and I wouldn’t say not announcing an opponent is the same thing as hyping a surprise). That was just the one insider Twitter account. I wouldn’t blame the news sites, they were only just trying to find out why WWE were being so unusually secretive about things on this house show.

WWE did hype it up, the journalists made a huge deal of how “productive” WWE was with its plans and telling people to “keep an eye out” and of course wrestling fans have a bad habit of letting their imaginations run wild.

I will say I'm not mad at this, I didn't even think Brock would lose or anything especially with it not being taped, but like WWE has a steady reputation of that "soooomething might happpennnn here " marketing online that gets picked up and blows up from that spark and then the payoff is nothing. I'd say tonight was a good exercise for me at least to not get hyped up about secret mystery WWE business. The biggest weird thing WWE did for me was closing that Smackdown with Heyman's tease of Brock's opponent as the cliffhanger and all the talk about him not walking out of MSG as champion, then sending out...Austin Theory? It's just kinda weird booking. Like IDK just say it's Brock vs. Theory than dinkin around about it. Or have Heyman actually send a threat Brock's way, or have him send someone he believes is a threat like Brock vs. the Usos in a handicap match or a triple threat?

For what its worth, Heyman was interrupted by Theory, who immediately took the match before Heyman could finish his promo or whatever.

They advertised Lesnar defending the title...and he did. Any other speculation/rumors/fantasy booking isn't on them. Lotta stuff to go after them for. This ain't it

I'm not saying they promised Cody or something... but the way it was worded was deliberate to make it seem like it'd be a big deal match. Brock vs. Theory is not that. Granted this is also the company that once booked a mystery partner over the course of the show that ended up being "literally no one" .. but still

I think when they promote a “mystery opponent” I think it’s fair for fans to expect at least a somewhat big name to be that guy. Now, I’m saying they were teasing Cody or something like that. But trotting out Austin Theory as a big surprise is really lame. I don’t know who you bring out there, but bringing Theory makes it seem like a big joke.

Say what you want about AEW but when they promise the fans something, they usually deliver. I don't think I've ever seen them hype up "BIG MYSTERY OPPONENT!" and then it turn out to be Shawn Spears or something. Saying "it's on us" for getting excited is just excusing their shitty behavior and decisions. They know what they're doing. They hyped this up and we are allowed to be disappointed. AGAIN.

To me, if I went to Dynamite that promoted a Adam Page title match with a mystery opponent, and you know Tony would hype the shit out of it. Fans would think of every wrestler available….then they trot out Kip Sabian. Yes, technically it was a title match and it was a mystery opponent, but fans would have a right to furious.

and people wonder why the WWE doesn't get the benefit of the doubt most of the time?
shit like this.
they KNEW that hyping a mystery opponent would get people talking... and instead of giving a match that people would actually be excited to see they give Austin Theory.
would some still have bitched if it wasn't "Cody" or whoever their pie in the sky choice was... yeah probably... but give a decent match up that people could at least be like damn that match sounds cool would have been enough to satiate some people.

I should make clear for clarity’s sake, I haven’t been watching RAW or SmackDown much lately, so I don’t know if they actually DID hype up a surprise or not. If they did, sure, go nuts with the torches and pitchforks. If they didn’t, if they merely didn’t announce an opponent, I feel like that’s not the same thing as hyping a surprise.
