Like many have said already, ideally, you want something in the middle. Keep the established guys over, because they're your draws and have the experience, while also pushing new guys to be on their level.
Fixating on who you consider to be "your guys" and only them is not sustainable in the long run and is basically the problem the main roster has.

HHH: I want to make NXT as big and watched as Raw and Smackdown. HBK: I want to keep using NXT for developing talent. VINCE: I want more titties on NXT. The boobs and booty show being run by a born again Christian is still some of the funniest shit ever.

Good picks, especially Dream, unfortunately. Triple H seemed to be extremely resistant to getting rid of Dream and definitely championed him. Itâs a goddamn shame Dream turned out to be a piece of shit, because that dude had $$$ all over him. Very reasonable chance he wouldâve ended up the biggest star that NXT produced (well, for WWE. They made Adam Cole a massive star for AEW tho) And I think the only reason that they eventually gave in ... besides the crowd turning on Dream... was when he came back from the suspension/injury/mystery disappearance he was clearly like 3 steps behind where he left.

There is the whole thing about it being Hunter's show while he was booking and Vince's show when HBK took over. Also we'll see how much making these talents into bigger names for the main roster matters if they exist by the time they hit the main roster.

Boy, that Dream vs. Strong feud was awful. The dude who got THROWN OFF A BUILDING was somehow the less likable guy.

I more lean towards HBKâs style. If you think you have something, try it out. And if it doesnât work, go back to the drawing board. Iâd rather you try and fail, than not try and be left wondering what might have been.
But I think a combination of both would probably be best.

Thing is HHH did try though he was just a guy who took his time to trying new things he stuck something in the oven and let it get a bit overcooked before he served it....and when he did actually act faster on it we got Karrion Kross and we know how that worked out in peoples eyes.

Triple H had great success when NXT was WWE's "Super-indy but also developmental" brand.
Then AEW happened and Vince expected him to win a gunfight with a pocket knife. Shawn doesn't have those expectations on him so he can pretty much do whatever he wants and see what sticks.

Enzo and Cass, and the Vaudevillains were both teams that HHH didn't get but the crowd loved so he booked them to do stuff... How they basically imploded on the main roster is not HHH's doing

On the other hand, and please understand that I am a big fan of Triple Hâs NXT overall, he did miss the boat on some people and got obsessed with others.
I think for example he was a bit too fond of âlong title reignsâ especially heel ones, later on.

That is NWA booking 101, long heel reign with babyface chasing. I'm not saying it is wrong, but it can get a bit monotonous, sort of like a HHH promo to open a 2003 RAW. The plus side is that it should, in theory, make the title mean more as opposed to having a new champion every 2 months. The downside is that you get the never ending Champa/Gargano feud.

You also get Shayna Baszler as the heel champion for WAY too long (and I feel like he dropped the ball on Dakota Kai and Candice LeRae a lot during that time).
And while I think Adam Cole is awesome, his reign went on for far too long as well imo.

Yeah and there were a lot of plot beats that were white hot at first use that got super overused to diminishing returns, like: -babyface takes long journey to win title, then "shockingly" loses it almost immediately to new monster -two allied wrestlers are standing side by side, then one "shockingly" betrays the other They felt huge and genuinely shocking the first times they did them, then became boring tropes from overuse.

I feel like Michaelsâs booking is basically what Triple Hâs was in the first few years of NXT, before the place became the haven for indy stars.
A perfect example of that shift was Rick Boogs. If heâd been there in 2012/2013/2014 and done his schtick, heâd have been on TV every week and been a Tyler Breeze/Enzo Amore-level cult hero of Full Sail. Instead, he has ONE (1) match on NXT, another one elsewhere on YouTube from WM35 weekend, and other than Old Spice commercials the next time you see him is on the main roster with Shinsuke Nakamura.

NXT under hunter was not producing the kind of talent Vince wanted, at the end of the day.
It's funny, the big success NXT had in developing fresh talent came as a side effect of their stripmining of ROH and the indies. While the plan was to kill the info scene with a touring super indie, he cleared a lot of land for fresh shoots to grow.

This victim was in a messaging group that was called exposing "n******". So he clearly had evil intentions for his interactions with the Velveteen Dream.

And the locker room hated him. Rhea, Finna, Dakota, Shotzi, and Angel Garza all tweeted/retweeted/liked stuff about how Dream was trash. If that shit is going on in public, imagine what they were saying to higher ups behind the scenes. On the other hand, and please understand that I am a big fan of Triple Hâs NXT overall, he did miss the boat on some people and got obsessed with others. Roman's never ending reign, Charlotte and Becky having the women's divisions in strangleholds, Britt Baker's reign of please just make it stop.

I have no clue why all the companies have such a hard on for this booking template these days. It's boring AF and almost never works. I think it could be good but you have to have the right character for it like Honky Tonk Man back in the day. A cowardly chicken s**t heel with a lot of heat who holds onto the title through luck and escaping. However they never do that. It's always dominant reigns leading to dreaded misery booking even if it's someone like Britt who you think would perfect for a long reign like then that she's a chicken s**t heel and she has lackies with her however they've booked it horribly where she always wins and the babyfaces are all either dumb asses or apparently have no friends with them constantly coming out by themselves even though you know Britt is going to have Rebel and Jamie Hayter with her and they both constantly cheat and interfere for her all the time.
