What's the story behind Piper wearing this to the ring?

I know it's been posted here before, but is there a story behind this?

I was thinking well perhaps his gear got lost or stolen somewhere and he took whatever he could find that night and this was a one off. But if that was the case, why add the elbow pads. Piper never wore those before

The tights are longer here too. More like some kind of bicycle shorts.

Was there a rebrand done for Piper after he got back from filming they live that perhaps was not well received and aborted?

To me he always has to be blue tights, red boots with RP on them. I always disliked him in anything else

Piper wore elbow pads when he took over the Brother Love show in November 1989. He came out, played to the crowd and brought out Brother Love under a blanket and when he took the blanket off, he revealed that BL was tied and gagged and only wearing his boxers. It was retribution in Kayfabe for him and Rick Rude embarrassing him two months prior.

I figured it was one of his first matches back from his first retirement and maybe he wasn't sure about his look in tights so he wore some longer ones instead. Kinda like Savage wearing a shirt.

Yeah, not sure why but LJN and Hasbro put Roddy in red every time (LJN even with the bendy figure and thumb wrestler). Would be wild if this rare time he had red elbow pads was why the Hasbro figure did.

I always wondered the same thing. I have an old Apter mag, can't remember exactly which one, but it had Piper wearing the red gear pinning Savage with a roll-up.
I don't recall seeing Piper ever wearing this, although it slightly predates when I started watching so I wasn't sure what the story was.

Some of the 1991 series Hasbro were all based on late 1989 outfits like Macho in his short lived purple trunks, Rockers with green pants, Warrior with his white Survivor Series 1989 tights and Piper's rare outfit made the cut. You can't tell if it's shorts or kneepads under the kilt but given the timing along with the elbow pads it adds up. I also always wondered why he was made that way as I was used to blue.

I still rarely ever saw him in red, though. When he wasn't in blue he tended to wear either green or a maroon tartan-patterned set of trunks.

I remember Savage having the short purple trunks at Survivor Series 1989 although I think the back design was different in that he had a crown on it while his Hasbro just had the Macho Man in white lettering that he always had up until he became the Macho King.

I think the most interesting choice in the 1991 series is Dibiase in the green and silver suit that he wore from summer 1988 until about February 1989. I think March 89 is when he switched to his more iconic gold and black one as I'm pretty sure that's what he wore when he fought Blue Blazer on the SNME that month. Honestly I kind of liked the green and silver best although the gold and black is the most memorable likely simply for the reason that it had the most longevity as that was his look for pretty much three years straight (Spring 89 to Spring 92).
