The channel's long since settled down since those early years, now the home of Royal Family exposes, Jane Macdonald touring everywhere, endless talking head shows about TV calamities, and have now gained infamy for axing Neighbours
But oh the 90s...Porn at the weekend, Hercules and Xena, Sunset Beach, and who could forget the infancy of Milkshake, where they thought the best thing to subject to two to four year old kids on a weekend were reruns of Captain Power and the Bill Bixby Incredible Hulk!

Introduced a lot of kids to New Zealand via The Tribe and all its wonderful cheesiness.

the last very exciting new channel moment for me, and i almost wanted to go for one of those re-tuners jobs ...
anyway i still have the tape where i recorded most of the first night programs with two little boys, hospital! and beyond fear, as well as the countdown and this is 5! starter pack!
but the sport was a huge draw for a night owl like myself, with the indycar racing and surprisingly the baseball, i think also the NHL too ... and with nfl switching from channel 4 as well
i can't even remember watching xena or hercules, but it would have been in my wheelhouse, since i was hooked on lexx and poltergeist the legacy ... and even sunset beach!

Four terrestrial channels were enough.

As a Newcastle United fan I distinctly remember our Europa League campaign on the channel.
In all seriousness Channel 5's biggest strength has been their American imports. They had a good knack of identifying programs that later went on to be big deals. People forget House, Prison Break and the CSI Franchise were first on C5 before being picked up elsewhere. The issue was the quality of their domestic programming didn't match up to it.

Do you have to have a license to watch tv in the UK?

Do you have to have a license to watch tv in the UK? only for BBC channels (and iPlayer by extension), because those are funded directly by the license fee and will never air adverts or product placement. it's perfectly legal to not pay it and just avoid those channels.

I know a lot of people like to give the BBC a lot of shit (and there have been times when they’re absolutely justified to do so) but I still think £160 a year is a bargain for what you get. And that’s just for TV. The Attenborough documentaries alone are worth the cost!

the Spice girls and Pepsi Max - this is for some reason what i think of when someone says Channel 5 start up.
Got to give it to them for being the only UK TV channel to have a football chant about them.

I remember that we couldn’t get it for the longest time in our small village due to shitty signal, and I remember watching a countdown screen at my grans house as she could pick it up.
Then of course those Friday night movies shaping my teenage years. Good times.
