Vic Steamboat I thought would be a huge star. The Cheetah (?) I remember a blurb, “what would you expect from a cheetah?!” Not sure if it was the Cheetah or Cheetah Kid. DC Drake I always wanted to see. Tugboat Taylor & Chaz… got to see them on GWF daily. Flash Flanagan was cool to see him in the WWF lightweight division but he didn’t live up to my PWI hype. Same as Devon Storm. Did Rockin Rebel ever show up in a major promotion? I had forgotten all about Flash Flanagan! He made me remember Donovan Morgan and Michael Modest, who were all over those mags back around that same time. Rockin' Rebel popped up to job in both WCW and WWE a time or two. Closest he came to a run with even a well known indie was in the early 00s, when he was a part of Lobo's Army in CZW. He had his own group briefly after Lobo retired.

I remember reading Christian York was the next Shawn Michaels but I never saw him do anything of note.

I remember reading Christian York was the next Shawn Michaels but I never saw him do anything of note. He had a brief run in TNA YEARS after the hype had passed. He got signed through the Gut Check thing. Before that, he had worked every major indie, flirted with the big time a bunch, even signing to WCW and WWE briefly at points, but never making it out of developmental. It's strange he didn't make it farther. He had plenty of friends in the big companies (he had tagged with Joey Mercury for years on the indies, and was tight with the Hardys going back to OMEGA) and actually was pretty talented in the ring. I wonder what kept him out while other guys like Mercury, Shannon Moore, and Shane Helms (all friends of his) got much more of a shot.

I might be recalling this wrong but want to say the Apter mags for a bit were hyping up Kevin Northcutt. And he never made it out of deep south small to medium sized indies.

He made me remember Donovan Morgan and Michael Modest, who were all over those mags back around that same time. Modest was one of those people who fell victim slightly to bad timing. He was a decent hand who I think was on the brink of being brought into WCW when the shit started hitting the fan. He was the right sort of wrestler to have succeeded in the 2000s indy boom, but was at least five or six years older than most of those wrestlers, and didn’t quite have the upside of a Christopher Daniels or someone for his age not to matter.

Larry Cameron. He was hyped as a future star of the 90s.

Northcutt was featured a lot in 2003 TNA as part of Red Shirt Security. He had some good looking power moves but nothing in-between.

DC Drake got a lot of press from them. I really wanted to see him, and the rest of TWA, which was later sold and renamed ECW.

Sorry to bump a dead thread but one of the people that jumps out at me was "Nurse Vanessa", a valet for Dr. Johnny Feelgood. The Apter mags were OBSESSED with this woman for a while, going so far as to do a multi-page spread of her, no joke, taking a dip in a Jacuzzi, with plenty of spots of her sopping wet body.
I was confused as an eleven year old wrestling fan...and now I'm creeped out as a FORTY year old wrestling fan.

He's been around for ages, but Mr. Ooh La La. Madd Maxxine (not the WWF jobber, but a woman who exclusively wrestled men in the PWF) Italian Stallion and George South were jobbers on the main stage, but I remember reading a lot of their exploits from PWF in the Apter Mags. They gave a lot of coverage to ECWA around the time of the first Super 8 tournament, and there was also a hostile takeover angle involving "The Master". Was this the WCW guy, Curtis Iaukea? Or a different worker? Other ECWA guys who got a lot of mentions (some became more famous than others): Lance (Simon) Diamond, Devon "Crowbar" Storm, Ace Darling, Cheetah Master, Reckless Youth, Mike Kruel, John Walters, Scoot Andrews, Billy Fives, Glenn Osbourne, Japanese Pool Boy, The Haas Brothers, JJ The Ring Crew Guy, Jeff Peterson (the nephew of company owner James Kettner, who was diagnosed with cancer, attempted a comeback, but sadly passed away), and Chance Beckett, are all names I remember reading about quite frequently. For a while, Mike Quackenbush had his own column in one of the magazines, when he was starting up Chikara. In general, I learned about Smokey Mountain, ECW and USWA from the Apter Mags, so I was a "smart" fan way ahead of my time lol I remember them giving Balls Mahoney (then known as Abudah Singh) a mention in a couple of issues, because he threw fire at Abdullah the Butcher in his debut match. A LOT of those guys would have been my answers. Reckless Youth, Glenn Osbourne, Devon Storm and Ace Darling for your Northeastern quadrant. Joel Deaton and Billy Black as the next great tag team. Seen them a couple of times on GWF TV.

Mongolian Mauler was one to a degree, IIRC.
Then he made it as a blip on the radar in WCW like 1994 or so.

Another tag team I remembered - The Lost Boys, Yar and Wolf. I remember seeing an "Introducing..." piece on them in one issue, then a few mentions in other articles, but nothing more. And both guys have sadly passed on, Wolf in 2011 and Yar in 2021.

I just saw a twitter post by Dwayne Johnson about seeing George Napolitano at his Black Adam premier. George's photos were a big part of those b/w magazines from our childhood. For someone who liked looking at pictures more than reading the text, especially.
I really liked the PWI Alamanacs that came out in 1995 and the next few years. The PPV results were awesome but could be a disappointment too (not PWI fault LOL). Like they would have total ring results of PPVs so when I got the Great American Bash PPV I was pissed when half the matches weren't shown or when Harley Race/Haku was cut out of Rumble 89. I was also totally confused when they listed the Warrior/Honky team match as first for Survivor Series 1988. As I only ever knew of the coliseum video version, I couldn't understand how PWI got this one wrong. LOL.

Vladimir Koloff was another guy they loved to talk about. A LOT of those guys would have been my answers. Reckless Youth, Glenn Osbourne, Devon Storm and Ace Darling for your Northeastern quadrant. Joel Deaton and Billy Black as the next great tag team. Seen them a couple of times on GWF TV. Didn't they get a match or two in ECW? Or was it one of them with a different partner...I want to say they had a match with the Eliminators. Billy teamed with the Punisher (a young Barry Buchanan) against the Eliminators at the Arena 3/30/96. Billy had a few matches around that time. Black & Deaton did pop up in Smoky Mountain early on.
