A food that went from a punchline to very common in my life time. Weird how that happens in society

Most larger supermarkets I've been to now have a section with at least some basic rolls, so that is neat.
I'm in what I think is probably a suburban area of a mid sized city (Lansing, MI) and have 3 or 4 places I can order sushi from. Granted I'm also next to a big college town so it may be more diverse than most similarly sized cities.

Sushi is great. Love me some California Rolls or just a basic Spicy Tuna Roll.

My GF got me addicted lol.
There's a place a few towns over that does build your own Sushi Burritos... which is heaven in your mouth.

Love it. Alaska Roll was my go-to, then I tried the Spider Roll one day and it's even more amazing.
But it did used to be a common punchline in the 90's. Not sure if it was just because of the gross-out factor of it being (mostly) raw or if it was a thinly veiled shot at the upper class crowd that eats it from the writer's room, but it was persistent for a time.

Damn now I want sushi. It's kind of hard because it's either REALLY good but expensive as hell or really cheap and is total garbage. Really hard to find that balance.

It's fine enough. I'm in the middle of the prairies. Just because you stick a Japanese guy behind a counter, I don't think we're getting actual sushi. If I ever make it out to the coast, maybe I'll get back to you.

Funny...from something that from my childhood was always described as something repulsive ("Raw fish? EEWWWWW!") to something that when it's made fresh, is one of the most delicious delicacies I know.

Probably a bit xenophobic humor, a bit taking a shot at what was an upperclass novelty at the time, and just that most people viewing didn't have realistic avenues for trying it.
Conversely, you also had souffles deflating due to loud noises as a gag, and I doubt anyone's made that joke with a comedy in 20+ years.

Sushi!
What IS sushi?
Is a california roll a sushi?
Is a rice bowl with fish on top a sushi?
Why is it when it has rice attached to it is sushi but when it's just the fish it's called sashimi and not sushimi?
Why do sushi places need so many chefs to make sushi when you don't even cook them?
Tuna sushi, salmon sushi, cod roe sushi, lagostine sushi, rice sushi, there's sushi of everything!
And they tell you can eat it with chopsticks and bare hands... but I'm eating it with sock covered feet!
All of this and more on this episode of In... The... Tuna...

There could be a really fascinating study of how society's relationship to sushi developed, from revulsion, to joke, to delicacy, to something you can buy in a garage. There's a similar story for a lot of things and I think says a lot about us.
And good sushi? There's little better

All I can say is baked sushi is an atrocity. Just the texture of the entire thing is ass.
Pretty much meh on sushi rolls. Had a time where a regular weekly thing was a sushi roll that consisted of ham (or bacon) with scrambled eggs and the usual seaweed wrap. Kinda made me tired of the whole thing.
Raw fish is still good, though I do prefer my version in my country. Kinilaw. Raw tuna, mackerel, or shrimp, chopped up, then mixed with onions, ginger, chili and soaked in vinegar mixed with some salt and calamansi (something like marble sized limes, but not quite).

That topic also brought to mind something I saw once on "Zoey 101": what would probably be the percentage of people that pronounce it in the Japanese way (like "sue-shi") or that pronounce it in an "Americanized" way (something like "sash-shi" or similar)?
