So I'm watching the first Primetime taped after WrestleMania III and Bobby & Gorilla talk about the celebrity guests. Gorilla gives a standard babyface announcer for most of them until Bobby asks about Aretha. Then he says that she was a different story, that he'd tell Brain about it later, but that she left a to be desired.
Anyone have info on this? Gorilla pretty much buried her.

She barely made it to the show because of traffic I believe.
Damn freeway of love.

Her talent aside, I heard she could be a diva.

Probably didn't shake everyone's hand 20 times in one night. Maybe she was a diva, maybe she came in with an entourage, maybe she didn't mingle with the wrestlers prior to the show, maybe she didn't get the memo to stay until after trhe main event. But she was paid to do a job and she did it. Vince loves his celebrities and he wanted her there and she performed per his request. I'm all about respect but the whole "respect this business" line is garbage when most wrestlers don't even respect their peers unless they adhere to the whole backstage BS.

But I do remember Al Sharpton hosting Raw where he arrived just in time to do his segment at the top of the show and subsequently left.

I would say most celebrities used by WWF/WWE don't care about wrestling. The ones shown in the crowd probably do but they are rarely used, just shown. Vince is obsessed with celebrities, especially the ones who have no interest in wrestling. It's like a guy trying and trying to get a woman to go out with him that has no interest. Vince just has the money to convince them to do a little skit.

I guess whatever she did didn't bother Vince too too much as he brought her back for WrestleMania 23 twenty years later.

As a 4-year-old kid the first time I saw the Coliseum version of this show I just remember being very concerned that she was going to get lipstick on that microphone.

I assumed Aretha was being The Queen, did her job and left, and probably didn't want to interact much with the low-brow characters backstage at a wrestling show.
Given the way Gorilla treated Cathy Lee Crosby on commentary at WM2 and barely tolerated Mary Hart at WM3, he seemed to have a weird thing with women in general.

Gorilla could just be a grouch sometimes. That, and I don't exactly fault wrestlers if they felt slighted, whether it's "deserved" or not. If your work invited someone in who looked down their nose at you and your coworkers, I doubt you'd feel great about it, either. Shocking, people don't like being condescended to.

As said Gorilla could just be a grouch some times, or he could just have done it for a bit. I could see potentially Aretha's usual demands for cash being seen as a diva move... but it was her way of protecting herself from being scammed by people running the concerts... (It's also why she always had a purse with her when preforming so she knew that she had the money and more importantly where it was.) I could also see if it's true that hse left without watching teh show rubbing people the wrong way but... she was paid to do a job, not watch a show... Whatever it was Vince is smart enough not to hold a grudge or pick a fight with someone like Aretha Franklin, (hell he usually goes out of his way to not piss of the celebrity guests as a whole), so I doubt it was ever anything super serious. They never should have made her Doink… never... or Definitely?

Gorilla Monsoon is more of a Gloria Gaynor kind of dude.

I see the confusion here.
Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan are characters. Sometimes they just say things they don’t actually mean. For instance, while they often bickered on camera, they were good friends IRL.
