Say he doesn't go to the WWF in 1996 but to ECW. Could he have become an even bigger star then jump to the WWF in 1998 or 1999?
He goes down there to ECW and feuds with Dreamer and Beulah, Sandman, Rob Van Dam, Sabu and more. He could probably put up some amazing spot fests too.
Could definitely seem him winning the ECW TV title.

Mero in 1996 ECW would've felt so out of place. For one thing, where do you put him? Raven and his Nest were feuding with Sandman and Dreamer. Douglas was involved in the TV Title feud with Pitbull 2 that grew to also involve Scorpio and Jericho at one point. Sabu had his angle with RVD, Taz was being built up as a prizefighter for the Sabu feud. Eliminators and Gangstas spent the whole year feuding over the tag belts. The Dudleys had their family feud happening at that point. And just about everyone else was opening match/jobber level. Where does Mero fit in that would've made sense?

I doubt it. I do think going right to the WWF benefited him the most because Sable got him a big contract.

It's a hard one...But I say even though Mero did feud with Flamingo (Raven) in WCW with Page that Mero would show up to attack or maybe align with Pillman

Like Marc Mero was going to work for some pissant pawnshop in Philly getting hit in the head with various blunt objects, and lord knows what else.

If Mero was willing to lean into being a meta heel I think it would be great.
ECW fans would HATE his spooters and gimmick. If he went with it he would get so much heat, and he could win a match by firing his scooter off in someone's face

I don't think the crowd would chant nice things about Sable.

Mero knew his value, he wasn't going to leave WCW, who wanted to keep him, and their offer to go somewhere he'd be paid in promises. ECW's big selling point was increased exposure or a career reinvention, Mero had been in WCW tv and had a decent push, he hadn't been chewed up and spat out the way the WWF would do to him.
People forget he was a hot free agent, and not in the indie darling way, but a legitimate rising star, ECW would have been a big step down.

Wasn’t or isn’t Mero a born again Christian? I read the book Titan Shattered that says he is or was a very religious man to the point where he objected to having another man’s wife in his corner. If that’s the case, wouldn’t he object going to ECW?

If that’s the case, wouldn’t he object going to ECW? He had Booty Babe in his corner, but yes he was pretty committed to his beliefs. I can't see Mero in ECW. That's like having Boy George unironically performing at a grunge rock festival. He was well on his way to being a US champion in WCW and then who knows. Would be very interesting to know how things might have been different if he didn't jump ship.

Those fans would have had none of Johnny B Badd.

It’s been said, no way he was downgrading to ECW. But when he was still using a more high flying style I could have seen him as a solid fit working with the likes of RVD.

Those fans would have had none of Johnny B Badd. Which is exactly why I could see Stevie Richard's bringing him in to try and impress Raven. Only leading to Raven beating up Stevie, fighting Mero leading to Dreamer making a save.

As much as I think it would sound great, I'm not sure how Mero would do with all the storylines going on in ECW circa 1996-1997. I do know that his Johnny B. Badd gimmick would have gotten a boatload of nuclear heat from The Mutants...and they would not have had anything nice to say about Sable (assuming she went to ECW with Mero).
