If we were looking ahead, MJF would been perfect guy to take the title but that whole situation is a mess. Wardlow most likely gets a dominant TNT title reign. They can sort of take their time with Punk tho he doesn't need the title long. I expect some old territory trotted with Jericho and maybe Danielson

Didn't see it yet but did Punk turn heel or do it straight up?

Didn't see it yet but did Punk turn heel or do it straight up? He knocked the ref out by swinging Hangman before hitting the GTS but they could play that as just a fluke thing or him being a sneak so it could go either way, after that it was all clean.

Really phenomenal match. Punk wasn’t athletic to begin with, and now he’s approaching his mid 40s, but it doesn’t matter. The guy just oozes ring psychology and his matches are damn fun to watch.
I actually came in with the mindset that I’d be pissed if Punk won, but the way that it was done was so awesome I ended up loving the match.

You guys watched a different match than I did. Punk just doesn't have it in ring anymore. He's several steps behind. The only good thing is that Hangman is no longer champ. Hopefully he goes back to the mid card. AEW has all this talent and they just... idk man. I want to like AEW, but there's just something off. 1. Bold take given Punk's been putting on some of the best ring work he's ever put on for this run, and that's been very widely said 2. Hangman's more than earned his position on the card, calling him a midcarder is also a pretty bold take imo. What I'm saying is I guess a lot of other people watch a different show? Lol

Punk/MJF not being a classic match either time is certainly an opinion you can have that I won't share lol, but fair enough

But to me, just going by the WWE run, his classic matches are VS Jeff Hardy at Summerslam, VS Cena at MITB. VS Undertaker at WM. VS Rock at RR. Those are classic. He's still amazing on the mic, and I've enjoyed every single promo. But he's not the same in ring. Still tho, he's def a better choice as champion over Page.

If I'm being honest I don't think there's ever been a CM Punk match where I've been like, "Yes, wow, that was stellar, loved every second of that!" (yes including Cena), but there have been plenty of them that are very good. That's what I thought tonight was, it was very good and told a solid story even though it's not an all-time classic or anything.
Either way I think Hangman was kind of a dead-end as champion anyway. Everyone he hadn't already beaten has something going on at the moment or just isn't a very interesting prospect. He'll have the belt again but now for it was time to wrap it up.
... I really hope AEW gets into doing some shorter title reigns soon.

I wouldn't be against, for example, Punk and Bryan trading the belt a few times.

I thought I didn't mind who won but the more the match went on the more I felt like I needed Punk to win. It's not often you get legitimate feelgood stories that propels wrestling as a whole and Punk's comeback is one of those times. A great moment and I was surprisingly emotional.
Hopefully he drops it soon. He definitely doesn't need a long reign.

Only blemish was Punk botching the buckshot lariat twice I liked that commentary covered for it as Punk not perfecting the Buckshot technique yet. Dude has always been shit at landing on his feet. Remember him falling on his ass when getting out of the AA in his MiTB match with Cena? Its just how he is. Never been athletic, but makes up for it with his psychology and story telling.

Remember him falling on his ass when getting out of the AA in his MiTB match with Cena? Its just how he is. Never been athletic, but makes up for it with his psychology and story telling. A lot of 2003-2004 era ROH crowds would get on his case about being "sloppy", and he'd lean into it in promos sometimes when he was heel. Sucked to see him fall twice on it, but Punk's famously decrepit knees and his status now as the Old Man Logan version of himself makes it easy to just integrate it as him only having so much left and having a weakness he has to work around using his ring smarts and craftiness. Regardless, I really, really dug the match, have a tough time choosing between it or the Anarchy match as best of the night. Was pulling for Hangman, but I don't think I've ever heard such a 50/50 crowd before, it was actually kind of amazing to listen to how neither man could sustain cheers because half the crowd was firmly in the other guy's corner, haven't seen a dynamic like that play out so clearly or on such a big stage before. ...also hoping that AEW champion Punk gets to interact with and/or wrestle Naito for Forbidden Door.

That was a true 50/50 crowd alright. And I've never seen a match between two faces get so many boos because of it. It was wild and really added to the 'big match feel'. A true main event.

I will say, I bet Dynamite hits a million this week. I don't like Punk but putting the title on him was absolutely the right call. I think along with no NBA competition, I think he's about to draw some money.
