If I'm being honest I don't think there's ever been a CM Punk match where I've been like, "Yes, wow, that was stellar, loved every second of that!" (yes including Cena), but there have been plenty of them that are very good. That's what I thought tonight was, it was very good and told a solid story even though it's not an all-time classic or anything. Either way I think Hangman was kind of a dead-end as champion anyway. Everyone he hadn't already beaten has something going on at the moment or just isn't a very interesting prospect. He'll have the belt again but now for it was time to wrap it up. ... I really hope AEW gets into doing some shorter title reigns soon. He's really good at ring psychology and pacing a match but he isn't a great technical wrestler and he isn't athletic enough to do a lot of big moves. So his matches always feel one step away from being amazing. But usually, that's fine because he amazing on the mic to sell the match and get the crowd super invested in it.

Gotta say, on the outside, Punk’s not really the guy I’d ride with on top for a variety of reasons but I get it, he’s the big star and all that.

I really think Punk winning was the right call. Better to leave people wanting a little more with Hangman rather than dragging out another year long reign.
I don’t think Punk will or needs to hold it too long either. A few defences then I think he drops it at All Out or Full Gear.

Punk has always been sloppy in the ring when it came to athletic stuff, but I think this run is the best he’s ever been in the ring. The psychology in these matches is so good, and his matches feel the most like if wrestling was a real sport.

Putting the strap on Punk was the right call.
Interested to see what they/he does with it. Being a babyface champ is harder than being a heel champ IMO, not that he’s incapable, but he doesn’t have a chase to carry storylines so he’s going to have to have some well-thought-out and well-played feuds to make it really work in a big way.
They’ve certainly got the roster to put on top matches with him but I’m more interested in what kind of stories they come up with. This one to me was murky as hell.

Aside from the dog collar match, I haven't really been a fan of Punk's in-ring stuff since he got back. But I can't argue he's probably the most interesting option for the belt right now.
Hangman is still my GOAT tho

But he clearly doesnt need to be. His storytelling and character work in ring is perfect.

Congratulations to Punk. Didn't expect it, honestly I didn't watch it much but it is what it is. Now that I think about it, Hangman's reign interestingly enough reminded me of Punk's super long WWE reign. Yeah he had dope matches but he didn't feel like THE GUY all the way through it. He was a dope champion but eh, it had me wanting more.
I guess we'll see where this goes. I hope he loses the belt this year. Nothing against Punk but nah, they got bigger and better guys out there for that.

I think you gotta go with Kingston when he gets the definitive win over JAS. That feud is built in.

I rewatched the match without the anticipation of the winner and enjoyed it even more the second time. They really played up so well to the mixed reactions and Hangman sold the whole story beautifully.

Thought the match was clunky (on a night where there was A LOT of clunkiness) and Punk winning gets a pretty resounding 'Meh' from me, even if I totally understand why they did it but it is what it is.
