Probably his way of ''looking humble'' in his book nah seriously it is funny that Hogan ended up getting more points under Bret's system than Bret himself. Hard to do with all the parts talking about all the hot girls he banged and how people were coming up to him with tears in their eyes to tell him how great he was. For some reason I get the feeling that he didn't realize that he was more or less saying that Hogan was a better all around performer then him. Oh yeah, as I was reading his book I was like ''and he wonders why Julia was so paranoid about him sleeping with other women?''.

Honestly, there were a lot of these storylines in the late 00s-most of the 10s where there was no possibly way anyone involved thought it’d get anyone over.
Like, an indie doing something like this would be one thing, TNA did it a good few times and the people involved were better with more oversight but you couldn’t tell me the Vince of the late 90s wouldn’t take this story pitch and tell the writer who did it to do better.
Especially with a guy like Axel who wasn’t ready, the fans knew he wasn’t, agents were probably screaming to Ace or whoever that he wasn’t but Vince of the now just did it because of some weird logic only he knew about.

Also shout out to how they were clearly super late in actually settling on what his new name was going to be because of how in his initial redebut his minitron said Curt Axel.

Kind of off topic but speaking of Julie I find it funny how her prediction of God striking down Triple H has finally come to fruition. Sure she was comically off the mark for twenty five years but I guess it turns out she's a prophet. "What goes around comes around Hunner"

"What goes around comes around Hunner" I can't agree with finding it ''funny'' about Hunter having heart issues years after Bret left. Back on topic however, Curt I don't think was ever going to be a World Champion on any of the televised Wrestling companies though I could see him being World Champion at some indie Company some day.

Should've clarified better I was thinking more about him losing power in the company. The health related stuff obviously isn't funny. Axel just got hired as an agent for WWE so I think he's done as a wrestler. He's also one of those guys whose older then what you would think as he turns 43 in October which means he was already in his early 30's when he debuted in WWE which is kind of odd especially considering most of the new crop of guys they were hiring around that period were pretty much all early to mid 20's.

Thank you for the clarification, I lost my Father due to heart problems so I was a bit concerned as to where that part of our interaction was going tbh. As for Hunter losing power in the company...well, for now at least it seems you never know what's round the corner these days. Weird to think that Axel is already 43. Hope the agent thing goes well for him and if he is done with being a wrestler than I hope his post-wrestling career goes well for him.

I think there is a strong case for two runs; The first would be a transitiory run where he beats Hogan during their feud, but doesn't hold the belt long. The second is if Hogan didn't return in '93 as well as Luger not turning face, that he could have easily been built as the second top face behind Bret. Unfortunately his run as a face was always overshadowed by other faces, and his heel run was also never going to be able to compete with Razor Ramon (cocky bully), Shawn Michaels (flamboyant boy toy), Yokozuna (evil foreigner) or Owen Hart (weasely jealous brother).

Sorry, my mistake. I was talking about Curtis Axel not Curt Hennig. Curt, I think, would've been cool as a short-term champion at least at either WCW or WWF (as they were known back in his day).

^ That makes sense.
Yes, Axel was never in league with any main event talent as far as I'm concerned. I know people say he was a good wrestler, but I never saw much to say he was better than most other talents during that period. Even as Intercontinental champion, that was a huge stretch to me.

The weirdest thing about "you have to earn Joe Hennig" is that they constantly referenced his lineage and even gave him the tagline' better than perfect'. You have to earn your name but we will call you better than your dad. Weird right?
Also, Hogan's in ring work in the NWO was garbage and probably deserved a 2 or 3. But then he knew he could get away with it there.

They changed it mid-show. He gets re-introduced early in the night as "Curt Axel", by the time he enters for the main event, he and the tron are changed to "Curtis Axel".

Axel is a guy I think other wrestlers appreciated more than fans really saw. Aside from the aforementioned praise, Regal always put him over a lot on NXT and said (many, many times) that "He doesn't know how good he is." Kinda like how Orton has a much higher rep as a wrestler with other wrestlers than he does with the fanbase as a whole.

He was probably just a good guy who was a solid wrestler that was easy and safe to work with. Good qualities that us fans aren't going to be aware of. However as fans we saw him as a guy who other then the brief Axelmania deal wasn't very interesting personality and while good in the ring wasn't spectacular in the ring. However if you are coworker of someone in the wrestling business you probably don't give a crap if he doesn't have charisma or is super exciting in the ring. It's more important to them if you're good to be around and aren't going to hurt them in the ring.

He was charged with training The Rock to shake off his ring rust before the Cena matches so there's a lot of trust there and he's been rehired at a time when the Rock/Roman build could start anytime soon.

I will continue to die on the hill of Curtis Axel being a much better performer than many fans give him credit for, but they pushed him as the wrong kind of heel during his title run. If they'd presented him a a weaselly chickenshit heel with a sense of entitlement due to his family legacy, and let him show some of the goofiness he'd be praised for later, I bet the reign would have gotten over.
His music should have stayed the same, though. That theme rules.

He wasn’t good enough. Some times the answer is easy.

Brock too when he came back in 2012.
