Think my go-to example's probably always going to be Injustice 2. Bought the version with all the DLC included and wound up hardcore checking out on that game before even the first DLC pack released, much less the rest of it, and the game's on sale all the time for dirt cheap these days; doesn't help I've made attempts to get back into it and really just find it to be a plodding aimless chore of a game to return to with an awful unbalanced stat system that makes it a pain in the ass to actually try out any new characters.
Edit: Changed title to clarify this is about money rather than time.

In 2020 I spent way too much time on NBA 2k and NHL HuT.
Edit: To give another answer about money since the title changed I guess the Star Wars Arcade 1up 3/4. Its cool but I barely played the damn thing for the price compared to its sister NBA Jam one which I spent alot of time on. Maybe wish I got the OutRun version for a similar price but I wonder if I'd feel the same since I did enjoy playing the Star Wars one when I come across it in the wild.

This one hurt, especially since I'm a fan of fighters. The absurd grind for a chance at *anything* just ruined it. Last thing I remember buying and not grabbing of Game Pass or anything is probably Dragon Ball Fighter Z. Game was enjoyable enough, but our PS4 first crapped out not long after, and by the time it was running again I just didn't want to go back to it, so that was $40 wasted...

Recently, the Contra Anniversary Collection.
Sure, it was only 20 euros when I bought it but still...bought it mostly because I liked watching Mike Matei live-streaming some of them but learned the hard way that games that one has to play in one sitting and that you have to start all over after losing all lives are not for me.
It makes me kinda sad because I thought about getting the Castlevania Anniversary Collection but if I am having so much trouble with these games, I should probably stick with more forgiving games.

If we’re talking about money spent, then probably none since I almost never preorder or spend extra money on things like season passes or micro transactions, and only buy DLC if it’s for a game that I already love.
Now, if we’re talking about time spent, well…. *Cringes while scrolling through the long long list of mobile games I’ve played over the years*

I don't know on the Contra ones but the Castlevania games have save stats if that helps.

I remember paying full price for Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance back in 2005, when I had a limited source of income (I had no job at that time). This was at the brief time back in the mid-2000s when beat-'em-up games were trying to make somewhat of a comeback (even in 3D). It was not worth the $50 I paid for it. I bought it again later on online for much cheaper deal. It's not a great game, but I didn't hate it. However, it wasn't worth the initial price it went up for back then.

I remember I pre-ordered Agents of MAYHEM, because I loved Saints Row 3 and 4.
The game was down from full price on the OSN to about $10 within about 3 or 4 months, and the deluxe edition with all DLC is about $5 nowadays.

I bought Ted DiBiase Jr as a DLC and I still don't know why.

I always buy the Assassins Creed Deluxe Edition with the season pass at launch, at least for at least the last three games (Egypt, Greece, Vikings) but then the DLCs just sit untouched in the backlog forever.
It’s weird, because I really really dig the games. But by the time the DLC comes out I’ve moved onto something else and just don’t bother to jump back in.

I paid $100+ for the MVP Edition of MLB the Show 22 this year, and spent some money on top of that on packs and stuff. Normally, I feel like I get my money's worth out of Show games, and always have fun playing Diamond Dynasty. But, I despise the game this year. The single player content is tedious, the Showdown mode is deliberately unfair, but you have to play it to unlock the good stuff, and I don't feel that the game plays especially well online.
I played it for about a month and a half before I had this moment of realization that I wasn't having any fun at all, so I just stopped and started playing through FF7:R again.
Definitely the most I've spent on a game as compared to how long I actually played it/how much enjoyment I got out of it.

Destiny 1 and all it's dlc's.
dont get me wrong I loved the game, but I bought it and all the dlc's for it on both ps4 & xbox one and not one item from it moved over onto destiny 2 (thankfully xbox got a deal for most of the dlc to go to gamepass so only had to have that instead of shelling out twice for it.) and with destiny 2 now being cross play I dont have to split my game between consoles to play with friends.
I do miss certain things about d1 though.

Duke Nukem Forever. It was £10 and I thought it couldn't possibly be as bad as people were saying.
To date it is the only game I've ever traded in without completing first.

Sadly, it’s Earthbound.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE that game, it’s one of top favorite games of all time.
But NO video game on earth is worth 200 freaking dollars.

World of Warcraft. I spent God knows how much money on that game between expansions and the monthly sub.
Funny enough, the game mentioned in the op is one of my great video game bargains. I bought Injustice 2 Legendary Edition on a whim when it was on sale for $15. I put a ton of time into that game and had a lot of fun with it.

I played for about a week or so and just moved on. I don't pay for a lot of DLC. My biggest regret was probably Far Cry 5. I just didn't like any of the extras.

When the ball is played in the infield my players revert to Little League.
