There are two things that will always be true about SNL: 1) The show was the greatest when you were in high school. The cast was hysterical, the writing was awesome and the humor was smart. 2) The show sucks now and should be immediately canceled. People have been saying the same things since the 70s, basically.

BTW-Anyone notice NO mention of the Eliot/Garafolo season? Yeah they kinda flew past it, although in my opinion that was probably the worst season of that decade. Which was a shame because the cast that year was LOADED. And that executive (Don Ohlmeyer I believe) was so full of s**t. Norm McDonald didn't become not funny. He's always funny. I just have to see him and I laugh. IIRC Ohlmeyer was BFF with OJ Simpson, and he (Ohlmeyer) did not approve of McDonald's constant lambasting of OJ. Way to defang the show even more, Don!

Oh I agree that it was the worst season of that era. I just disliked how the whole thing was a giant pat on the back, with no nod given to that year as a bump in the road. Then again, it wasn't a documentary by some impartial filmmaker, so they could do what they want.

I caught some of that SNL show last night. I thought Norm had a bad falling out with the higher-ups at NBC and was kind of surprised he was featured so prominently on the special last night. I think they got over that quickly. I mean, he hosted the show a year later and even mentioned it in his monologue.

SNL has been sinking deeper and deeper since the early-90s. I mean look at that cast: Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Farley, Rob Schneider, all of whom had great careers after they left show. Hell even Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon, who didn't really go on to big film careers, were great on that show. Then in the late-90s they had some high spots: McDonald, Colin Quinn, and or course Will Farrell. But in the last 5 or 6 years there's been no real reason to watch the show. You know what else sucks? That when Viacom bought Comedy Central they took all the old SNL reruns off of that channel and replaced them with crapty Mad TV. Even more annoying is that when the moved all the episodes to E! they hardly air any SNL. If so it's very sporadic and they only go back from as far as the previous season. I haven't watched SNL consistently since 2004 but every now and then I'll pass thru it. This season is a lot better than last year but they made a good point last night in that they usually have their best episodes during election season. Which I totally agree with.

I saw that special last night, and it reminded me how hilarous Chris Farley and Phil Hartman were. I remember growing up in the mid 90's sneaking and watching SNL (I was supposed to be in bed), I didn't really get the jokes, but I still loved how zany Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, and Will Farrell were. I watch those reruns now, when I get it, and it's so awesomely funny. Now the show kinda sucks, which is sad.

The best thing ever on SNL is a man named Bill Brasky! His poop is considered currency in Argentina.

Thirded. Would a petition do any good, you think? I love that there are 2 Will Ferrel DVDS, and I believe an Alex Baldwin DVD from his hosting gigs, but Norm doesnt have one. Kinda stupid.

I really can't believe you mentioned Colin Quin in the "high spots' section there. he was one of the things I hated about SNL in the late 90's. Norm however was the greatest. Watch his movie Dirty work... it's glorious.

I sorta wish they would have done that with Sean Connery. That my friend, would be the greatest thing. True, but I don't it would have happened. SNL can draw A-listers, but not the A+ listers (save for Hanks who had SNL roots). Any way you slice it, it would have been nice to do. BTW-Anyone notice NO mention of the Eliot/Garafolo season? They mentioned it very briefly in an aplogetic way. I think the comment was that people didn't like the 20th season but if you look back there was still stuff people liked.

A year after he was fired, he came back to host the show (his monologue was priceless). And, he showed up on that big 25th anniversary special they had in 2000. Even if that NBC guy had ill will towards Norm, Norm never seemed to have much ill will towards SNL.

Watch his movie Dirty work... it's glorious. Yeah, Colin's jokes were horrid. And his delivery was so...non-existent. It was like he didn't even know he was telling jokes. The coolest thing about Colin Quinn was, on his first night at the Update desk, he said he had some big shoes to fill (meaning Norm's). I'll never say Quinn wasn't a nice guy, but he sure isn't funny.

Baldwin has one from hosting the show ten million times. Will Ferrell does have 2. What's funny to me is that Jon Lovitz got one just a year or two ago. Not that I think Lovitz isn't funny, but his career has been far from stellar.

It could be because most of Norm's stuff was on Update where as the other best of package features more sketches. Not that I didn't like Norms sketch characters, all of whom were pretty much Norm
