It could be because most of Norm's stuff was on Update where as the other best of package features more sketches. Not that I didn't like Norms sketch characters, all of whom were pretty much Norm Save Bob Dole.

And I did once put together a pretty nice list of sketches for Norm's potential Best of. I'll see if I can scrounge it up. EDIT: Couldn't find it among my own things, but I found this, which pretty much matches my idea of what it would be like: www.norm-macdonald.com/best.htmlOne addition I would make would be the one sketch where Norm, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, and Tim Meadows take turns going into the polar bear tank after hours at the zoo. Farley: HE JUST GOT TORN APART LIKE SO MUCH VOLLEYBALL! MacDonald: "Like so much volleyball"? What are you, Thor? I would also naturally add at least one Celebrity Jeopardy, and "Inside the Actor's Studio" where Norm plays Clint Eastwood.

If you guys want to read a great SNL book, read "Live From New York". Its basically all of that, and it goes into detail about the history of the show from behind the scenes. Best of all, there's no ghost writing, its wirtten in interview format.....the only text is the interviews straight from eveyone on the show (Akroyd, Bill Murray, Norm.....everyone). Its like reading one long SNL shoot interview. Its a great great read.
The reason Norm got canned is that he really wasn't that funny. His jokes were smart, but smart doesn't always equate to funny. Norm's approach to it was that he didn't care if anyone laughed except for his friends......well, if thats your approach, why are you on national TV? Why not just go entertain your friends? If you listen to his monologues, he really never made too many people in the crowd laugh. According to ratings, people were tuning out during update. Yeah, Ohlmeyer obsessed over it. Norm having Jim Downey as his writing partner didn't exaclty help matter all that much, either.
I think Norm is funny occassionally, but he's not the comedy God that a lot of people make him out to be. I like Nealon's off the wall humor much better, but his jokes were tired (tons of Latoya jackson jokes, obvious, obvious jokes).
Also, the show has tanked in recen t years because Lorne isn't very much hands on anymore, and essentially the network has taken control of the show and turned it into a promotional vehicle.

That's your opinion.
And more people laughed for Norm than ever for Colin Quinn.

Coin Quinn sucked. Essentially the network wanted every joke to kill on Update, and Norm isn't that kid of guy.
Also, at the time, he really wasn't that funny. Let me correct myself.....his jokes weren't that funny. He was. Still, though, you could hear a cricket in the room when he told a joke, for the most part.

Saturday Night Live was hands down the greatest when they had Macdonald, Nealon, Spade, Farley, Myers, carvey, Elliott etc. back in the mid 90s.

Norm, was in my marshmallow opinion, the best Update guy thingy, since the glory days of Dan and Jane. Thus far, only own two of the Best Of dvds (Spade and Lovitz), but would in a heartbeat throw down the cash for a Macdonald collection.
