The face turn felt kind of sudden to me. Compared to his work earlier in the year messing with Razor Ramon.
Did anyone else feel this face turn was very abrupt? He had plenty of momentum left as a heel going into 1997?

Ehhh, the turn was probably the best thing for him since he basically wasn't advancing forward into anything special after the Taker feud. He went from the IC title and Taker to Marc Mero and trying to get Sable if I remember correctly

If he stayed heel, he'd have gotten lost in the shuffle much sooner than he ultimately did. There was nobody left he could realistically feud with on the face side. He'd worked with Undertaker, Mero and Ahmed. He'd had a TV match with Shawn and lost, so not much point in a long-term feud between them. Bret and Sid were feuding for the World title. And Rocky Maivia was too new. Plus you could tell they had cold feet about playing up certain aspects of his character, especially with USA on their ass over the Pillman gun segment. So better to transition him to a face role and solve two problems at once.

The Ahmed feud, if you can even call it that, really cut him off at the knees. After losing the belt at KOTR in their first and only televised match, he just sort of meandered off to other things, with only a handful of house show rematches. He went from beating Mero at SummerSlam to losing to him at the October In Your House, and then was one of the sacrificial lambs to get Rocky over in his debut at Survivor Series. They probably could have made Goldust-Maivia a real feud for a few months if they'd wanted, but instead it felt like they were trying to get him back to being a less controversial version of Dustin Rhodes again. Unfortunately, Dustin Rhodes in a gold suit, being managed by his wife, wasn't very interesting.

I think Goldust had just as much potential as the Undertaker for a long, storied run, but they shortened his shelf life by locking him into that homophobia character where kissing other dudes was like his whole thing.
So yeah, his face turn was premature, but probably necessary given that they had dead ended the character.
