I'd day Bam Bam Bigelow and Oliver Humperdink as a babyface pairing. They might have been a better pair when Humperdink was a heel manager. As a babyface pairing you had an athletic big man with tattoos paired with an goofy guy wearing sequins. Bigelow was a good enough talker as it was and didn't really need a manager.

I would have really enjoyed this pairing if it was a heel Bigelow and Humpy was a heel like back in his Florida days going against Dusty. But that’s not what we got.

This still wasn't as bad as Shawn being paired with Jose Lothario. This looks like a headmaster’s office where the put upon dad is trying to defend his wayward son once more.

Years ago, I watched a compilation of WWF clips, I don't recall the subject....I do recall guys being super, ultra, extra pumped Oliver Humperdink was their new manager.

At that point Bigelow wasn't a good talker at all. Honestly I never found him to be a strong promo although he at least became serviceable during his second run in the mid 90's. When he first joined the company in 87 he definitely needed a manager though. I agree the combination with Humerdink would've worked much better as heels as Bigelow had more of a heel look and babyface managers usually end up being useless during matches since they can't interfere like a heel manager can. However they already had plenty of giant fat guy monster heels with Andre, Gang, and Bundy. Kamala I think was still around at that point too although not for much longer as I think left the same month Bigelow made his TV in ring debut after all the build with The Battle for Bam Bam stuff with the managers. So in that sense I understand trying with him as a face considering the landscape of the roster at the time and also for willing to try something different instead of the usual monster heel comes in and runs roughshod over the promotion for several months and then Hogan beats him and he falls down the card.

Randy Orton and Stacy Keibler when he was floundering as a babyface and they made her his girlfriend I'll forgive this for his RKO on her. Completely out of nowhere, and she sold it like death

Heenan and Rick Rude. It didn't suck because both are great, but Rude just didn't need a manager. All he needed to do was go out, call the fans out of shape sweathogs, kiss a girl from the audience and bam, instant heat. I feel like Heenan added to his character. Kinda like a sports agent. I just wish Rude stayed with the WWF long enough so he could break away from Heenan. He would've gotten a mega pop if he performed the Rude Awakening on him. Back on topic. Slick didn't match up with most of the guys he managed, most notably The Bolsheviks. What sense does it make to a hustler straight from a 70s blaxploitation film be paired with a bunch of communist sympathizers? Also, the brief time Mr. Fuji managed Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart.

It’s amazing how little Arn Anderson added to Cody’s act outside of getting himself over with the gun promo and being the first person to block Malakai Black’s finisher

We did have the pairing as heels in 1990 WCW and I don't remember it being much better, or much of anything for that matter. They were trying to fill the void of Captain Lou for face managers, and it didn't work at all. Humperdink was just good for a quick end game for guys (Orndorff, Bammer) to screw over the heel managers.

It was a carry over from when Slick bought out all of Freddie Blassie's contracts (which included Volkoff), but other than that?

Probably why he was phased out after a little more than a year of working with them. He wasn't with them at Survivor Series 1988 (though Jesse incorrectly assumed every team had a manager) but he did a promo with them late 1988 where he did all the talking. And not long after Nikolai had left and Boris jobbed for a year by himself. When Nikolai returned and they were back briefly, Slick was not there.
