Penta was basically a ninja skeleton, and Brian Cage was a walking tank. Even if you discount the cinematic videos, the booking still convinced you how big of a deal wrestlers were. I'm kind of disappointed that TK isn't just copying what LU did with Penta.

Everyone had something to stick out about them.

God yes they did.
Let's look at who some of the bigger names were in LU, and how they were presented:
Pentagon - Arguably the face of the franchise, but not the babyface, if that makes sense. Classic antihero. He was their Scorpion for their live action Mortal Kombat. Always looked like a badass, always booked like a badass.
Fenix - White meat babyface personified. I mean, literally the in-universe embodiment of "never say die" and resurrection and all that. I still wonder how he didn't die from Mil Muertes yeeting him in some of those matches. Speaking of...
Mil Muertes - For those of us old enough to remember when The Undertaker debuted, it's the same vibe. An unstoppable force of nature obsessed with the dead. Catrina is a lot better to look at than Paul Bearer.
Rey Mysterio - Rey was a legend before LU, but they used him right.
Matanza - Your classic "unbeatable" monster.
Son of Havoc - Your classic underdog "lovable loser" that the crowd gets behind.
This is all to say that LU was fantastic at making characters. It's not always about the booking or the win/loss records, it's about characters that the audience loves, first and foremost. They made sure that characters were characters, and not caricatures.

Lucha Underground was produced by Mark Burnett, perhaps best known for his work as developer and producer for NBC's The Apprentice. So yeah, dude is excellent at making a lesser performer feel like a big, special deal, if you catch my drift.

Yeah. I’ll always miss LU. Felt like lightning in a bottle and I don’t think it’ll ever be replicated.

Prince Puma is still my fav version of Ricochet honestly. That whole gimmick was $$$.

Also, for all the complaints about Season 4, Johnny Mundo's face turn was one of the absolute best redemption arcs booked in a _LOOOOOOOONG_ time.

When they got it right, they got it really right.
And when they didn't, we got Sexy Star and Super Fly.

For all the spontaneity they lost with a pre-taped season of wrestling, the stuff they planned was generally executed really well. That and they had so many unique (and superior) spins on tried and true gimmicks. Aztec Warfare for the Royal Rumble/Casino Battle Royale but better, Gift of the Gods as the MITB but better, an Iron Man match made better by it being falls count everywhere in a unique arena, a love triangle but the resolution factors into the booking because they're also an intergender tag-team. Sure not all of LU was a hit, but they had way more hits than misses.

I've complained in the past about how dire Season 4 was, but the ending of the final episode with Dario coming back to life and Wade Barrett as the limo lord did give me some optimism about the show that I hadn't felt in a while.
