Was it only meant for the Hogan feud? I think if they ran with it for at least a year it would have been pretty good. That Bret promo segment in Canada was legendary.

Hogan insisted on working a heel vs. face program. Originally it was supposed to be a face vs. face “we just want to see who is better” program. Shawn never wanted to turn heel to begin with.
There were also supposed to be multiple matches with them trading wins. But Hogan pulled a Hogan and said at the last minute that he could only do one match, which he would win of course.

It was nice to see Shawn have more of an edge to his promos. I mean he was fine without, but he was amazing when he pulled it off.
Even if he didn't flat out stay heel, it would have been interesting if he kept up the attitude he was showing. It's not like the audience was going to be conflicted.

Originally, it was meant to be a gentleman's affair; "may the best man win" kind of thing. But fans likely would have cheered for HBK more given A) he was a full-time member of the roster and B) despite Shawn's history of being a bitch ass diva, the hardcore fans would be more likely to reject Hogan because... he's Hogan.
So, it ended up being a face Hogan vs. a heel Shawn Michaels.

I'm fine with him treating Hogan like an absolute clown especially given there wasn't going to be anything afterwards. Hogan wasn't going to give back that win, so might as well make him look stupid. |

Hell, HBK's selling in that match was the best part of it. The match just does not work if Shawn doesn't go full Mr. Perfect selling. Hulk could barely walk... so to put him over the seller has to go over the top. Did Shawn go even further than over the top... yeah... but it was the ONLY way that match would have been anything but a disaster. can you imagine if he sold like normal... it'd be just another in a long line of unmemorable Hogan nostalgia matches... we most certainly would not be talking about it over 15 years later. |

"Yeah, it means something obscene if it's a few inches lower, but if you do it up here, it means something totally different even though I don't clarify that to the audience while the other guy is totally doing it with the obscene meaning.
