Inspired by the Ricky Steamboat thread. Looking back, I don't recall Steamboat's "crushed larynx" ever being mentioned again after WrestleMania 3. He finished the feud with Savage and moved on with his career, presumably 100% recovered from the thing that put him off TV for weeks and weeks.
So have there been examples of wrestlers hanging on to kayfabe injuries over time? Austin's neck and knees, Foley's ear, Beefcake's face and Flair's back would come up on commentary, but those were real-life injuries worked into the narrative. Same for Bob Orton's forearm, with and without the cast. Looking for things that were strictly an angle but were treated as a long-term "weakness" for that wrestler.

I think DDP's ribs being perpetually taped from like 1997 onwards probably counts. The rib injury started out sort as a mixed bag kayfabe/real injury in his feud with Macho Man but, then, he just sort of kept his ribs taped up for the rest of his career as part of his look.

Matt Jackson has been selling a back injury on and off for about 3 or 4 years now. There may be an element of a legit injury there but I don’t think he’s ever missed extended time for it and it seems to always be the area opponents of The Young Bucks focus on in big matches.

Isn't Malakai Black still pretty much selling that curb stomp into the steel steps from Rollins?

would the four horsemen retiring paul orndorff with a piledriver on the floor count? owen had a cast on his forearm in 1996 "he keeps reinjuring his arm by bravely having matches, so he needs to keep the cast longer" d-lo brown's chest protector

Yeah, D'Lo's chest protector was my first thought. Shamrock injured him on screen and then he came back at KOTR with it and never looked back.

Chyna’s neck injury angle was used to justify putting her in the Womens division. Making her vulnerable enough that people like Lita, Ivory etc would have a chance against her.

Imagining a scenario where Paul Orndorf made his arm extend back to normal size and the dude in the ring who was about to kick his ass is like OH f*** OH GOD OH SHIT

Bobby Heenan wore that neck brace for an awfully long time.
Lex Luger "metal plate" in his arm. He was using that as a weapon in the WWF as a heel.
Greg Valentine had a shin guard for a good year (And I don't think they ever really showed how he was injured, they just claimed he was rehabbing an injury) that he'd use to increase the pain from his Figure Four.

Roddy Piper has his hip injured by Adonis and Muraco and was still selling that in a feud with Hogan a dozen years later.

When exactly was the neck injury angle? I know she had a match against Ivory at the Royal Rumble where she injured her neck after attempting a handspring back elbow and fell to the floor, but I don't remember her being weakened before that that she had to compete in the Women's division. Did the Right to Censor perform a group beatdown on her prior to the event? From what I remember, her and Eddie split in the fall of 2000, then she announced she was posing for Playboy, then she entered a feud with the RTC stemming from that. I just don't remember any kayfabe explanation on why she suddenly competed in the women's division other than that feud. If you can refresh my memory, that would be great.

Val and ivory gave her a spike pile driver. I believe that was the “cause” of the injury.

If I recall correctly, it was a few months before the Royal Rumble. The RTC "broke" her neck with a Spike Piledriver. Later on, Ivory mocked her and that led to the match at the Royal Rumble.

Shawn Michaels’ lazy eye after getting his head put through the tv monitor by Chris Jericho. Also his back problems that were always a point in his matches after he returned in 2002.
