Do you think here is any chance Disney will ever make a Star Wars show that does not somehow tie in with the 3 trilogies?
Seems like all we get are backstories or shows that can have guest appearances from Luke, Leia, Vader and so forth.
I would love to see something original who simply are set in the Star Wars universe.
I am currently watching Kenobi and though it is fun, with strong nostalgia, there is no suspense. No matter how many times Leia and Obi-Wan are chased or captured, you know they are in no permanent peril as we have seen them grow old.

Taika Waititi is saying his Star Wars movie will be completely detached from the larger universe.

Taika Waititi is saying his Star Wars movie will be completely detached from the larger universe. That was refreshing to hear. The Harry Potter universe should have someone with the same vision.

Acolyte might fit the bill. It's going to be set in the end of the High Republic era, so around 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace.

Like I adore Steve and Tony, but the MCU knew they had to step away from those two for a while. Star Wars being so Skywalker obsessed, one could make the argument it’s been a bit detrimental, especially with all of the unrealistic expectations IMO that were thrown Rey’s way.

Hopefully Waititi’s movie is that catalyst for something absolutely new. Though I’ve got my own reservations about it lol

I just wanna see non-epic style movies. Gimme Star Wars versions of Stand by Me, Beverly Hills Cop or Full Metal Jacket. Something like Rocky 4 with one Rocky being a Republic Hero and the Drago is a genetic specimen created by the Elon Musk of the Mining Guilds. Or give us a true horror movie, like the Thing or House on Haunted Star Destroyer. Do a wacky bachelor party movie. Give us Mrs Doubtfire but it's with Wookies. Do Pinocchio but it's with a droid instead of a puppet. Give us Commando with some random ex Republic Commando going to a Hutt Planet to save his daughter and murder a private army.

I just really hope they decide to go full bore with the dour tone of Andor in future projects. I can do without overly dark and gloomy Star Wars.

Acolyte is set during the High Republic era. Only familiar faces you're going to see there is maybe Yoda, Maz Kanata, or an extremely young Chewbacca (who was born 200 BBY).

I am still hoping that Rogue Squadron, now that the movie has been taken off of the schedule, will be the basis for the next animated series. Granted, that’s not quite what’s the OP asked about, but it’s not Skywalker-centric (even in the novels Luke and Leia only had cameos and Han didn’t show up until the Wraiths became the focus, though that wound up being more than a cameo by the end).
Whatever. Corran Horn, Mirax, Booster, and the Wraiths all need to be canon.

I think Star Wars is stuck because of the limitations of the franchise. Creators are only willing to tell certain kinds of stories, and fans are only willing to except certain kinds of stories.
Specifically, "Star Wars" to these people has to have at least one of the following:
- Jedi vs. Sith and general Force lore - Rebellion/Resistance vs. Empire/First Order - Gangsters and bounty hunters - Space battles, army battles, laser gun battles, and/or lightsaber battles
These are cool, Andor is easily the best Star Wars D+ show, for instance, and it does two of these things so far, but I've also seen or read or played these stories a bunch of times. Why not swing for the fences and try something new?
Reading the Rolling Stone Top 100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time thread, I think Disney Lucasfilm should do shows like Friends, or Seinfeld, or Cheers, or All in the Family, or Orange Is the New Black, or Sex in the City, or The Golden Girls, but in the Star Wars Universe and with a Star Wars twist that doesn't rely on the hoary tropes that have stifled the franchise in recent memory.

Taika Waititi is saying his Star Wars movie will be completely detached from the larger universe. After watching Thor 4 I could happily do without his input to the star wars universe, especially if he is voicing a character.

Ever since Force Awakens came out and made a major plot point out of "The New Republic is already dead, we're back to Rebels vs. Empire", my interest in seeing the Star Wars universe continue really plummeted.
There's two great Star Wars movies, a really good one, then a couple of "huh, that's pretty good" moments on screen since then mixed with a lot of "oh, that's not good" and/or "this is boring".

He already voiced a character in The Mandalorian and directed one of its episodes.

The SW universe is creatively limited. You've got either some variation of Empire vs Rebels or Jedi vs Sith and that's about it, with the only other route being smugglers and mercenaries etc.
Anything outside of that is better suited for an entirely different sci fi format.

I'd kill to see Wraith Squadron canon. Very force-lite series with exciting dogfights.

I never made it that far in the series, but I definitely enjoyed the first few books in the Squadron series as a kid. Looking back, it'd just be nice to have seen that and the original Zahn trilogy adapted, at least. The old expanded universe was obviously a mess in many places, but again, what it had built up in my head was "I want to see what the galaxy looks like now with the New Republic running things"; made the decision to literally blow that up in episode seven really suck in my book.
