Ah, good point. Red and Yellow Hogan has history behind it in WWE, especially with fans that grew up with it. It plain didn't have that in WCW. Makes me wonder how Hogan would have fared if he'd gone to WCW in 1990-91, when he still had bulk and looked like a prime Hogan. In '94 he just looked like some old relic on some kind of a midlife crisis ego trip, and he didn't approach Sting's level of popularity among the WCW audience. I've still never understood how x why red & yellow hulk didn't mesh with the wcw crowd. They had cartoonish, superhero characters before and it worked. Just one of those things I suppose

Just one of those things I suppose Thing is, even those characters had a (at least in the U.S.) better all around in ring ability than Hogan (like I said, just going by his U.S. style. He did things different in Japan). Even someone like Vader, while he had his big man spots, mixed things up better. Another example is Sting...while charismatic, to use RPG creation references, seemed to put a bit of his charisma points into technical wrestling if that makes any sense. Hogan was just trying to bring the style that worked with him to a company that in-ring tended to out-pace what he did. Well, that and bringing all his buddies over and pushing out rising stars in the long run, which could have caused resentment to the WCW base.

Yeah, I didn't even consider myself part of the "WCW base" because I was more passionate about WWF, but when I saw the parade on WCW Saturday Night and announcement that Hogan coming over, my response was eyeroll. I knew he was going to come in and beat everybody and that WCW would turn into Hoganland.

Red and yellow Hogan in WCW seemed to work better for the TV audience than the live crowds. WCW fans never really went all in on him and would even boo at times but he was doing great business for the company. Like sometimes it seems like there's a bit of a narrative that his first 2 years weren't successful and he needed the NWO to become a draw again but he completely turned WCW's fortunes around even before going heel. WCW's business was in the toilet from 90-94. Legends like Flair and Sting were sometimes working shows with less than 1000 people in attendance. Hogan came in and overnight was doubling their previous PPV buys and was the key reason why Ted Turner greenlit Nitro so he was still a massive draw even if something felt kind of "off" about him in WCW.
By 1999 I think the WCW crowds were fully ready to cheer him if for no other reason than it would mean other people would get a shot as top heel. I think it was a mistake going back to the red and yellow though. It worked for the first night back but after that he just looked weird. Maybe if he wore long tights but it was so jarring seeming him back in the yellow trunks. Hollywood Hogan was still a cool look and people were cheering him still wearing black and white in Mar-Jul 99 so I'd have stuck with that.

I think he reached a point in his career where people just didn't want to boo him, kind of like Undertaker over the last decade or so. That’ll happen, it did with Cena and arguably guys like Edge and HHH too. Hulk was getting big pops for years until the Bubba tapes started circulating, and then as the notoriety over the tapes rose he was eventually getting booed out of his hometown at Wrestlemania. It took something as damning as that to quell his reactions. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I was there and I don't recall a single person booing him. Not sure why they would either This is pretty much how I remembered it. youtu.be/GSF8uHDJm5wMaybe there were a few people booing closer to where you were sitting? But I never heard any
