Macho Man was the one who got me into wrestling the first time I saw him on TV. I loved his whole persona with the bright colors, aerial moves, and crazy promos. I however did not like his midlife crisis run in 1999 whatsoever. It still bugs me all these years later that his last PPV match was against Dennis Rodman. Did you miss his TNA run? His last PPV match is teaming with Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles vs Kings of Wrestling (Kevin Nash, Jeff Jarret, Scott Hall) I remember that he was there for like a month, but I didn’t remember him actually working a match.

It wasn't a midlife crisis gimmick, it was a midlife crisis that bled into his gimmick
I honestly found this run to be embarrassing in the main but I wasn't watching at the time so it is a hindsight opinion

Jarret? It’s J - A - Double R, E, DOUBLE T! Haha I love how Foley felt the need in Have a Nice Day to make a joke about that, something like, "Jeff Jarrett, which I believe is spelled J-A-DOUBLE R, Haha, E DOUBLE T", like that reference has to be very odd in the course of the written medium. I thiiink it may have been when he was telling the, "F*** you, Randy, you've never been in the ring!" story, where Jarrett defended him when Randy Hales called Foley a pussy behind his back for tearing up due to a stinger.

I seem to recall there was one okay match with Billy Kidman, on a random Nitro.
Outside of that, the match quality was just dire across the board. There were some real slugs in the 99 WCW main event scene, which didn't help, but all the same Savage was awful around this time.
He got Molly the job which springboarded her on to better things. And hey, that Charles Robinson vs Gorgeous George match at Slamboree is surprisingly fun. Outside of that, and the trivia of him winning the WCW World title one last time, it's a total write-off of bad matches, bad promos and bad angles.

Just way too muscular and bloated. It didn't even feel like the same guy at points

With the Macho Man, I was always partial to the Neon Cowboy look. Loved the bright color schemes and the sunglasses and hat combo. The 1999 look just didn’t do it for me. I also loved his black NWO gear as well.

IIRC, he had a final promo in October 1999 where he said he’d be passing the torch to someone… but that never really got followed up on. Would’ve been a good tome to have Savage be a manager/mentor to whoever this person would’ve been.

I'll always be a big Randy Savage fan but in 1999 he really had no business being anywhere near the main event.
Not to mention that match he had against Dennis Rodman at road wild 99... ugggh.

Was this the era where he slapped one of his valets in the face on live TV?
Or was that earlier?

He slapped Torrie IIRC, who wasn't one of his valets, but was leading to an angle where Gorgeous George came out during a title match with a black eye...only to reveal it was a ruse and it led to Macho winning the title. Yeah, the whole title feud with Nash was an absolute wreck in every possible way.

Yeah, the whole title feud with Nash was an absolute wreck in every possible way. Ah okay, I remember it being Torrie now, and she broke character and laughed in disbelief after it happened. I could be mixing that up as well. Maybe it was all scripted. I do recall the commentators having to apologize for it, and say that they don't condone a man hitting a woman. I was just shocked it was on live television.

It was sad to see. His look was always at its best when it was colorful...this was just too much constant black. Just made him look like another nobody wrestler. Plus he was way too big. He lost a ton of agility...he was laboring out there a lot more than he used to. Granted he was about 47, but steroids werent the answer there. Getting huge didn't add to his persona or make him a better wrestler or anything. Macho was always about speed, quickness, and agility. The physique he had in WCW in 1994 was just fine

Come to think of it, I remember hearing back in the WWF days (1985-1993), he was insisting on rehearsing the ppv matches he was having matches with, which is why he had some many classic matches back then (Hogan, Steamboat, Warrior. Flair to name a few)? I don't recall this being a thing once he joined WCW by late 1994? Maybe that and the advancing age lead to him not having many great matches during WCW run (DDP and Flair matches may be the exceptions)? I think DDP said that the reason why his feud with Savage was so great is that they both liked to rehearse and go over everything ahead of time Interesting you mention Flair though.. I remember Bret talking about Flair being one of those guys who came from the era where he basically believed in just calling the thing in the ring and not rehearsing or having any planned spots Granted Savage was also from right around Flairs generation (bit younger) but he is an exception being a meticulous planner. Flair never struck me as a guy who would be up for doing any of the stuff. I'm wondering if he conceded to some of it with Macho simply out of respect to him There is that incident in WWF where Vince came out and angrily told Flair and Savage to redo a match...so that perhaps could point to a moment where Flairs just call it as we go and Machos plan everything philosophy just led to a disaster in the ring
