On the subject of Matt Morgan and Jim Cornette another guy that Jim talked up as a can't miss prospect was Doug Basham.
I'll also add Lance Cade and Mark Jindrak.
Cade looked like a star, had support from guys like Edge and looked like he was getting pegged for big things when he was paired with Jericho in 08. He just never seemed to find his groove and i think drug issues did him in. He was brought back in 2009 but was released shortly afterwards. He passed away the following year.
Mark Jindrak like Cade had the look of a star, big athletic guy, looked like he was set for big things being paired with Kurt Angle but again never found his groove. I might be wrong but i read he was friends with Randy Orton and was fired because they either thought he was a bad influence or a distraction as he was seen as Ortons party buddy. He went on to have a decent career in Mexico.

I remember when NXT Season 2 started, Alex Riley was who everyone thought WWE wanted to win and wanted to push to the moon. Good ol' Alex Riley. You could see his entire career die with that "your breath smells like death itself took a dump in your mouth" line. He has that cup of coffee big babyface pop when he turned on the Miz. Then after the match between them. That was it.

Matt Morgan was the guy that came to mind the second I saw the thread title. The guy was not just touted as a future star but as a WrestleMania main event main stay. He had the look and ability but was completely in the negative in everything else.
Kinda on a different level but Bo Dallas was supposed to be a huge babyface star for WWE but was completely rejected. NXT leaned into it with the delusional heel bit which made his main event run work but the main roster blew it.

Just doesn't tick any of the boxes for me.

I'd like to know why they killed his initial main roster push as "Inspirational" Bo Dallas. He had a match against Mark Henry where he said something that made the crowd crack up. He was hilarious.

But yeah OVW had so many guys during the early to mid 2000s that were hyped up as huge stars but they just couldn't transition to the main roster. I actually remember the Basham being guys that WWE wasn't high on but decided they may as well give a chance to since they were getting pushed in developmental. Strangely/ironically enough I think around this time Al Snow was the head of developmental and in Nova's shoot he talked about how much Triple H said that was a mistake

Ahmed Johnson. Yeah, he was IC champion, but his rise was so fast and decline was so quick and final that I don't see how he could be seen as anything but a failed prospect.

To be fair, a lot of blame on OVW prospect failures is on the WWE. There were a lot of talented people who they dropped the ball on. I'm not saying Jeter or the Bashams were going to be WM main eventers, but they definitely could have been better than what happened to them on the main roster. Don't even get me started on Nick Dinsmore.
I'll toss one out there that hasn't been mentioned yet: Andy Leavine aka Silent Rage. He won TE, got the shit kicked out of him by VKM and SCSA, which I still don't understand and then did nothing. He was completely out of wrestling like 2 years after winning TE.
I'm also going to call it here for a future miss: Gable Steveson.

Daniel Rodimer.
I remember all the online chatter about how big Vince and Stephanie were on him.

Does Parker Boudreaux end up here eventually? Only if he ends up leaving The Trustbusters.

For a time Smackdown was booked as the place where developmental talent were called up, polished then sent to the upper card of Raw, then it just kind of stopped. Instead of grooming future main eventers, guys were given gimmicks that weren't ever getting over, jobbed out for not getting over and fired as part of one of the regular mass roster purges without ever having gotten a real chance. The WWE undercard became like a woodchipper for talent, if you weren't hand picked as a future main eventer you were DOA.

Sean O'Haire is a big one, there were a few rounds of "Oh man this guy is going to be big" that never panned out - WCW, OVW, Devil's Advocate vignettes. Seconding almost everyone of note from 00's OVW, though. Matt Morgan was a big one who was pegged as a future big deal who just never got good enough. O'Haire had *almost* everything you'd want in a megastar.

Right now he's basically AEW Dark exclusive aside from when the Trustbusters were in the Trios tournament. Still insanely raw. He looks a lot better than he did as Harland in NXT in terms of presentation.
