It debuted tonight. I had no idea they were bringing it back, but it’s something to look forward to.
I remember there was a night court thread here a couple months ago and everyone seemed to have positive memories of that show, so I was wondering what your thoughts were on this show.
It’s nothing mind blowing. It’s a 30 minute network sitcom with a laugh track. But it’s not bad either. I don’t know why people these days get so worked up about a studio audience and 4 camera set up. I can see myself growing to like it over time. It does that weird feel most revival shows these days have though. Small cast, slightly remixed theme song, brought back a couple of the original sets but got this weird vibe about it where it’s simultaneously trying to remind you of the old show and build up these new characters. It’s like it’s word building but a world we’ve already seen before.
Hopefully it’s more How I met your father and less Saved by the bell reimagined.

As a huge fan of the original series I enjoyed it. I do think It'll take a few episodes to hit it's groove, the real key will be if it can gain an audience beyond fans of the original.

I only watched the first episode. I thought it was fine. As someone that watched Big Bang Theory, it was jarring to hear Melissa Rauch's real voice... not mad, just weird. LOL It's an easy 30 minute watch so I'll keep watching.

On his Pod Meets World podcast, Will Friedle has talked a couple of times about his desire to do a true 80s/90s style American sitcom and his overall hope to bring the genre back. I think it's an uphill climb, but I wouldn't hate it

I haven't seen it yet, but as someone who watched it a bunch as a kid, I don't mind them trying.

They played a bunch of ads for it during the Twilight Zone marathon and I thought it looked pretty awful, though reviews seem okay so maybe they just weren't showing their best material.

I'll give it a shot. I liked the original series when I was younger. It seems that John Larroquette is the only person returning, which is fine. The only ones who are still around, Richard Moll and Marsha Warfield, I would like to see them return in some episodes.

I saw a Cracked article recently that asked if the new show would address this. Probably not as Richard Moll hates Night Court. I always thought it was because of the character of Bull as Moll seems to love playing villains. But apparently he hates one or more of his former costars. Maybe the ones he didnt like died though so who knows.

Maybe the ones he didnt like died though so who knows. You'd think Moll would have more issue with the writers who really Flanderized Bull in the latter seasons as he went from sort of quirky gruff giant with a heart of gold to super quirky idiot. Things did work out for the best though as right after Night Court he went on to play Harvey Dent/Two Face on Batman The Animated Series so big win there. As for the new series, it was good. John Larroqutte was able to slip right back in Dan Fielding like no time has passed at all and Melissa Rauch was pretty likable as Abby and played her role well against the other cast members. Speaking of which hopefully they'll get more character development as the season progresses, at least they're not annoying or bad in any way just a little seemingly one note at the moment, but if the show is to be truly faithful to the original like they intend it to be then they'll no trouble fleshing things out amongst the ensemble cast as it was one of the OG series' greatest strengths.

Though I just looked below and it appears he's the Tina Louise of the bunch?

I myself would love to see Brent Spiner return as Bob Wheeler at least one time in the new series. The fact that Dan would now be forced to defend him opens up the potential for a lot comedic gold.

The big change with Dan isn't that he's now the public defender, but that he's a widower. That's not something I would have expected to say about Dan Fielding, but it is fleshing out his character more, and more than likely keeps him from being the womanizer he was in the original series.

Ok, watched the first two episode and I'm kinda iffy on it. A lot of that though is just my general inability to really get into modern sitcoms. I don't know what it is about it, but like dialogue and stories nowadays just feel so much more awkward and ham-fisted then they did in the 80's/90's, where even if they got wacky, you felt like there was some grounding to them and just the conversations felt more natural. Also they feel a lot cheaper nowadays. Like, is it just me or do the sets of this new show look so much smaller and faker then the sets did for the old one?
Dan was easily the best part of the new show. I liked the bailiff as well. I'm really surprised that Dan's womanizing, which felt like his most defining characteristic from the old show, wasn't touched on at all in the two episodes. I guess they'll get there in their own time.

I don't know if Dan is a widower or not, his wife could have just left him.
Speaking of deaths, there was a vague reference to Mac and Christine, when Abby said Dan is one of the only ones still around.

I’m disappointed Richard Moll isn’t involved and not even because I loved the original. I fully appreciate how frustrated he must have been at getting type casted thanks to the role, but you’d think that thirty years was enough time for him to make some peace with it. If Jaleel White could make peace with Urkel, he should be able to with Bull.

Hard to figure out who as he refused to take part in the 30 Rock reunion which was Harry, Markie, and Robinson. And this reboot only has Larroquette.

The new one has virtually none of the original cast. Some of them are long dead. So his holding onto that is even more childish.
