In fairness RE: James Rolfe, his controversy mostly had to do with the Screen Wave guys latching onto him. James himself is still going strong to the point that people that do try to get angry at him can't find any dirt on him besides the fact that he's...balding? And this ties into the final thing, his shooting setup. James is easily one of the most prominent YouTubers out there, and he still insists on shooting in his basement. He's shown the ridiculous hodge podge of lights and camera set ups he's done, something that could understandably be a nightmare given the location. Why not have a studio? Don't tell me you can't afford it! This would solve a large number of issues, and cut down on the amount of time it takes to set up everything. Studios are expensive, and while Cinemassacre is helping him make a living I'd be very surprised if he was getting rich off it. To my mind the zero budget aesthetic is part of the charm. Why spend more money to fix something that isn't really broken?

That and having the audacity to not want to review the 2016 Ghostbusters movie. To be fair he coulda just not gone and watched it. No need to make a big grandstand about it. You don't see me making videos about how I'm not watching something directed by Zack Snyder You probably wouldn't be bombarded with comments and messages requesting you review it though.

it was a video on Altered beast too, a Sega game not even the most hardcore fans seem prepared to call good, such a weird hill to die on. Having come across their channels a number of times in recent years, they don't seem to offer any insight into the subjects of their videos they cover that hasn't already been done to death by a hundred other channels. LD's output in the last six months has almost exclusively "Look at this bootleg/ROM hack, isn't it crazy?" while THGM just churns out filler every few days. The Gaming Historian they are not.

Unfortunately they're constantly suggested by youtube for me, despite not having looked at any of their output since the weepy manipulation video. Even before them, THGM's videos were like a bad wrestling promo by a failed indie wrestler on a failed console or a Streetfighter Rom hack with irritating mispronunciations and LDs felt like that same content rewritten by AI, voiced by someone doing an impression of THGM. Intro with THGMLD mispronouncing a word to try and seem quirky, pose with console in home, in front of a wall of tens of thousands of pounds worth of retrogames or on holiday somewhere sunny, shallow rundown of the console lifted from wikipedia, maybe some wrestling footage, a few games, maybe a sponsor slot then more shilling.

I remember Summer 2018, I was going through a nasty breakup, and moved into a small, one-bedroom apartment. For the first time in my life I was without cable, and watched a LOT of YouTube on my AppleTV.
That particular summer, I got pretty into a crew of Pokemon Youtubers, who created a lot of content together, including a competitive "draft" league that I really enjoyed. The de facto leader of this crew was a guy, KingNappy, whose personality I enjoyed, and whose content I watched religiously. He was an extremely prominent creator in that little corner of the internet, with his videos consistently getting 100k+ views.
Not one year later, the story broke that he was, basically, a despot behind the scenes and forced people onto an extremely strict filming schedule, and was incredibly verbally and emotionally abusive towards the rest of the "crew." Worse yet, he attempted to use his position of influence to initiate sexual relationships with multiple, much younger, content creators. The others had receipts, and that was basically it for the guy. It was a career vaporizing felony, and he was gone.
Or, so I thought. Now, 5 years later, I am not really in a Pokemon phase anymore and I rarely watch Youtube. Yet, last time I was scrolling through my subscriptions, there was Nappy's channel, reactivated for a Scarlet/Violet playthrough. It was just eerie to see. This guy who, arguably, was the most prominent "poketuber" there was for a split second in 2018 is now posting new videos daily that routinely don't even break 1000 views.

That's my take, but I remember defending him to a few people (including a cousin who knew who he was) and was basically told I was defending a predator.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's annoyed by the way they deliver their lines. It's sort of a weird combination of being incredibly over the top while also being extremely stilted and wooden. That said, the thought popped into my head that that's just the way they talk, and now I want to see a skit of them going about their day talking like that to everybody they meet.

I genuinely do feel the Captain S/AVGN crossover episode did more to contribute to the death of 'The New Adventures of Captain S' than the cast getting burned out after one season did.
The AVGN audience weren't 'in on the joke' with Captain S and James, while he didn't break character, couldn't swear or up the ante on violence due to the nature of what he was crossing over with. The crossover left a lot of James' fans confused and angry, and resulted in many of them badmouthing the Captain S production.

This is why I stick to RLM, my YouTube safe space, where the only thing to worry about is how much longer Mike's liver can possibly hold out.

RLM did have a problem once with sexual assault and rape, but thankfully it was confined to watching "Deathstalker"

I fell off giving AVGN proper attention years ago but the more recent ones i'ver seen IMO get shit from people because they're all now obviously written and researched by sombody else and delivered by a guy who isnt an actor and doesnt have the talent to make it seem otherwise. The reaction is demented but then it's the internet.

I followed the rabbit hole by watching a bunch of videos from the account Lance Uppercut posted in the OP. I’ve never heard of most of these people and given the intense highs and at times incredibly abrupt crashes they make for compelling 10-20 minute stories. The ones I found most disturbing were the pro weight gaining YouTubers. In particular the guy who moved to Colombia and was about 165 lbs then grew to over 350 lbs. Also, the woman who attempted to start a weight loss journey starting at 368 lbs but eventually got to over 500 lbs.

On the Channel Awesome stuff it feels like the real unsung person who paid for that whole thing is Brad Jones. His videos usually barely get any views at all these days, with a very clear pattern since it happened of him just desperately trying new formats to try to find a new audience and none of it working, and he makes a fraction of the money people like Phelous and Todd do on Patreon. Just feels like he completely fell off from really being on anyone's radar in any meaningful capacity. And it sucks since I used to watch his stuff pretty religiously and he was often a go-to for when I needed something for noise but he kind of just showed his ass so thoroughly during that whole thing that I haven't watched him in years and have no real desire to ever again. Though he also scammed me once on a Kickstarter so that's fun. Another thing that hurt Brad is the fact that so many prominent reviewers on youtuber have risen up and done a better job at what he was doing. Channel awesome talent had the luck of being among the first online reviewers in video format, and had to amp up their game when competition became much more abundant. Brad absolutely was not capable of that. I find it funny that Brandon Tenold does a better of reviewing the same films as Brad did, even though he started as a new guy at channel awesome that was under the wing of the already established reviewers. He basically leaped frogged over them. It's kind of weird in that I sort of feel like even at his peak the Snob tended to be some of his worst content? I'd always look forward to stuff like DVR Hell and 80s Dan and really even just his vlogs way more.

Why spend more money to fix something that isn't really broken? I’m sorry, but the notion that someone has to go full “professional set” to make smurfing YouTube videos irks me. I have no idea how much using a studio actually costs, but I see nothing wrong with James’ approach, which if I recall correctly is a two room set in his home (the nerd den and his rental store set).
