Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Blazing Saddles, and a multi disc Benny Hill collection. A few days later I ordered a multi disc Monty Python Best of set.

As a family the first one we owned was Gladiator
Me personally it was Silence Of The Lambs which completely blew me away and is still one of my favourite movies today.

Not really sure. got my first player in early 98. I know Evil Dead was one of my earliest dvds.
Never really noticed till this thread how many people waited quite a few years to get a player.
I had before gettting the dvd player, had a Betamax VCr,VHS vcr, laserdisc player and a CED player.

Fellowship Of The Ring. I had heard that there was going to be an extended version of the movie released but only on DVD so I bought both a DVD player and the DVD of this movie when it was released. Only afterwards did I realize that the extended version wouldn't come out until much later.

The Goonies! I helped a friend with a wrestling column - in a knoown newsletter 15+ years ago - and he already had my address, so he sent me a few DVDs. This one stood out the most. One of my favorite movies!
(Oh yeah, my first DVD player they offered a free Lord Of The Rings DVD as well. I swear I tried watching that thing 4x and every single time I was asleep within the 1st 15 minutes.)

Fight Club was the first dvd I went out of my way to rent and watch all the special features at a friends house.
Also remember watching Ozzy Live & Loud at friends house and it looked and shouted incredible.
When I started collecting DVDs it was Showgirls and Pi. Since they were $9.99 which actually sounded like a good deal at the time. I probably had a few hundred at one time, definitely more of a quantity than quality collector. Then I collected all the Disney animated classic when that was actually challenge, then I collected 95% of Tom Hanks filmography. Now all that reminds is a box around 20 dvds probably scratched to hell.
Why the hell did i decide to start collecting vinyl records?

The Blues Brothers-bought this before I even had a dvd player, but planned to watch it on a computer my dad had just bought for the house. Something was wrong with the video card and it was awhile before I got to see it. This was 1998 and the going price at the time for a dvd was about $30

The Simpsons season 1. I was absolutely floored by the amount of commentaries and extras.

Spider-Man? It been so long that I forgot my first DVD.
I started collecting again after 13+ years and my first buy was John Wick 3 in 4K Blu Ray.

WWF: Action!
This was a compilation of matches from Raw, Smackdown and a few PPV's ending with Kurt Angle beating Booker.T for the WCW Title on Smackdown in 2001.
