The reign ending on 666 is so unintentionally funny, though. as soon as they mentioned that My friend I was watching with said "I would demand that my reign end at 666 days, if it lined up with Wrestlemania"

I feel like it was such a waste giving the belt to Sami. He's already won the belt before so it's not a big deal for him. It's just a glaring sign that he's reached the glass ceiling. He should have beaten Roman for the title at Mania last year and instead he's stuck with the IC belt.
Had Gable won it would have been a big moment for him winning his first IC championship.
The only good news is that now Gunther can move onto fight for the world title.

It in isolation was cool It should have been Gable, and I'm gonna be miffed that it wasn't and all of that didn't go to him when it very easily could have Gable wins it and there’s really no further for him to go, as I don’t think he’s really destined to ever main event. Putting him in the storyline with Zayn where one will likely turn heel will extend Gable’s shelf life as a featured singles. Where did Sami go after winning the IC belt in the past? Nowhere. He's exactly where he was then.

He also won the IC Title last night at a time where the IC Title means more than it ever has, and certainly more than when he won it prior.

I don't think midcard championships mean the same thing or the same tier now as they did under the last 25 years of Vince. Triple H generally booked the north american championship as an important belt, whereas the standard VKM IC championship was a heatless heel like Wade Barrett who'd just lose all the time. Hell the US championship is on the second biggest mainstream star in the company

The reign ending on 666 is so unintentionally funny, though. Especially with him being super-extra evil in just beating up Sami in front of his wife at ringside.

They ended his reign on Day 666? New Ministry of Darkness confirmed. I could almost see him as a different style of Ministry Undertaker. Grow his hair out, have him never smile, have him speak in Latin for parts of his promos, boom.

I pretty much agree with this, but while I thought Sami should have won in Montreal at the time, it should have been Jey that dethroned Roman and his 1000+ day reign. He's the third biggest merch seller in the company and massively over, he'd have become a superstar overnight. But they booked themselves into a corner by bringing Cody back for last year's rumble and him saying that finishing the story involved ending the bloodline. He should have won the title by beating whoever beat Jey. Also, should Cody win tonight (and he should), then ending that long running reign overshadows Sami ending Gunther's long reign. It benefits Gunther more than Sami.

Weeks ago I thought Sami had no chance. Then the way they built it felt like the type of thing you do if the face/underdog is winning. I was still leaning towards Gunther though. Then the 3 pre-match segments in a row with his his wife/child, Gable and KO made me think okay Sami is actually winning. Then I flipped again when Gunther was hitting those powerbombs and splashes. I was starting to think Gable might run out and throw in the towel for Sami and lead to a feud between them. When Sami started pounding the mat and getting that second wind and the crowd realized what was about to happen it was a great moment. That brainbuster on the apron looked like death. After all Gunther's been through they probably needed something like that to believably damage him and leave him open for the loss.

I really liked how it was the one time - or at least certainly to this extent - that Gunther got cocky and complacent in his whole reign, and it cost him.
If he'd stuck to his no-nonsense self, he'd have retained. F around, find out.

Long term: I like the potential program of Gable beating Gunther for the world title. As long as there’s segments of Sami hyping up Gable like we saw with the opposite.
