So recently, I was on YouTube looking up videos on this guy, particularly the stuff with Jillian Hall, whether it's stuffing worms into her nether regions or breaking off and eating that facial growth (*shudder*). But then I found some other information about how he was originally supposed to be an actor who portrayed a character on a cancelled TV show and was brought in to make good for the show being canned by The Network. Well, he was supposedly brought in by Palmer Cannon, who was a "representative" for The Network. Anyway, supposedly The Boogeyman's actor had gotten so deep into his character and believed he was The Boogeyman himself.
When I read about this, this was news to me. I never actually knew about this. Granted, the whole "actor-getting-too-deep-into-character" schtick was scrapped altogether and made The Boogeyman into the supposed supernatural being that he was portrayed as. Man, mid-2000s WWE felt like they were trying the whole gimmick stuff of the New Generation a decade prior, huh?
Did anybody know about this take on The Boogeyman's gimmick?

I just turned it off when Boogeyman was on TV, because dude regurgitating worms is not scary, just nasty.

I remember this and being disappointed that they didn’t go full-on supernatural “this guy is LITERALLY the Boogeyman” from the word go. I love me some ridiculous gimmicks, and the actor angle just seemed like a really half-assed way for them to have their cake and eat it too.

I was actually fine with Boogeyman. He felt like a mid 2000's Goldust to me, where he was just bizarre enough to be intriguing. He was never going to be a World title winner, so the route taken I think was best.
I don't think supernatural was going to work for someone who didn't have the legendary aura about them the same way someone like Undertaker did.
So the fact that they embraced that "this guy was wacky" worked for me, especially since ai flat out rejected the gimmick when I heard about it in developmental.
The fact that Marty Wright went all in on his character worked too. If he played it straight, I think it would have been awful. If he played it any goofier, then I think it would have been too much and worn out it's welcome.

I remember Boogeyman having an entire story arc in a WWE Video Game where he was a major threat and actually "Zombified" other wrestlers to do his bidding
It had more thought into it than I think WWE ever put into his booking lol

Yeah, they played the Boogeyman debut vignettes to be more like a Stinger for a TV Show originally from what I Remember.
He also wanted ot use more than just Worms... but like all of the other suggestions were flat out turned down by the venue (I think Roaches were one)

In OVW, he was supposed to be mentally ill and believe he was The Boogeyman. Until Santino no-sold the gimmick lol

Boogeyman going balls deep into the gimmick is a shining bright spot from that period of time.
Boogey eating Jillian's king size rice crispy treat mole right off her face on live TV is Grade A Entertainment. The perfect ridiculous ending to a ridiculous situation. A little bit of this kind of wacky bullshit is what wrestling needs to keep it interesting and different.

from every story I've heard about Marty Wright (the guy who played Boogeyman) he was insanely loved by everybody but he was so green when he started and his body was already pretty beat up (mainly knees) they just couldn't do half of what they wanted.
Paul London told a funny story about how Stevie Richards had this spot planned out for Boogeyman where basically Boogey would clothesline him knocking him out, Boogey was so green he basically just punched Stevie right in the throat... and in the process tore his own quad. So you had Stevie in pain gasping for air, Boogey on the ground in pain cause of his leg still trying to stay in character, and the ref just standing over top of both of them
