Firstly, I no longer feel guilty about it, because video games are meant to be fun and being frustrated going round in circles over and over about a puzzle I can't solve is not fun, f*** feeling guilty. Same as playing on lower difficulty settings. I'm not in a league, I'm having leisure time.
Secondly, even if I did feel guilty, it would only be if it turned out to be something I definitely could have figured out if I'd either carried on a bit longer or just stepped away to make a cuppa and come back to the game with fresh eyes.

Yeah, Simon's quest is a combination of bad game design and terrible translation that makes it almost unplayable..

Since getting it wrong usually yielded instant results (outside of not saving that smurfing mouse from the cat), you usually got to quickly learn and retry it. There were a number of sierra things that didn't become apparent until much later in the game that made it unwinnable or just flat out killed you. Space quest 2 an alien kisses you on the second screen and you die right before the end of the game. In one of the leisure suit Larry have if you don't pick everything up on the first screen that is required you can't go back. Never played SQ2 nor the first 2 Larry games so I did not know those examples. Granted, the last few Sierra games I completed were SQ4, KQ5, and LSL6 (not counting Jones in the Fast Lane, which I still play occasionally, because it’s a different type of game).

Yeah, Simon's quest is a combination of bad game design and terrible translation that makes it almost unplayable.. I owned Castlevania 2 as a kid. The only thing I needed a guide for was the trick to get a tornado to take you to the next level. Everything else was obvious enough.

Yeah, Simon's quest is a combination of bad game design and terrible translation that makes it almost unplayable.. It's actually worse than that. Even in the Japanese version, you were told weird and unhelpful things. A direct translation (were there enough room for one) would not have been much help.

this technically two questions and I'd like to hear answers for either. 1. Do you ever play a game, get stuck and feel guilty that you had to look up a hint online? Especially having to watch a youtube gameplay to see how someone else got out of that situation? 2. Have you ever played a game, got stuck and when you found the solution, you go "how the hell was anyone supposed to figure that out without help?" I'm playing Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages for the first time and.... currently I'm in Dungeon 5 (dancing dragon). I'm pretty much near the end but this one section where I have to drag this metal ball with the magnet glove had me stuck. I spend an hour or so just wandering the same 4 rooms trying to figure out what I missed. I looked online and it turns out I had to push the ball off screen where you can see anything, and go to another room several rooms away and somehow it'll just be sitting there despite there being a closed door where it should have passed through". I'm like what? How was I supposed to know that? you can't see where the ball goes when you push it off screen and you can pull it back on screen so it's not like it fell down a hole or threw a door. going back to question one, I'm like "damn I had to cheat for this 30 year old game boy advanced game? man I feel so bad for some reason". I paid for it since I was able to nab it before the 3ds closure, so it feels like I have to savor the gameplay earn it when beat this game. No, because having to look up solutions just means it's a badly designed game. Jedi Fallen Order, for example.

I used to feel bad and then I played the Ace Attorney games and no longer cared. I love those games to pieces, but sometimes the leaps of logic are completely nonsensical or you get penalized for realizing things quicker than the game wants you to.
Now, I don't care. I play games to have fun. I'll try a couple of times to figure something out and then look things up.

1. Not really but I did most of my gaming back before online FAQS and walkthru existed.
2.Not really I figured out Infocom's infamous Babblefish puzzle with no help.

How da fuq did you figure out the garlic in the cemetery? Pretty sure the clue was mistranslated. Were you just randomly throwing garlic in furstration?

I don't give a shit about looking things up, playing on lower difficulty levels, or even just straight up using cheats in certain solo games.
Video games are meant to be fun and relaxing. I like using my brain as much as anybody, but I'm not going to frustrate myself in my free time over an unimportant hobby.
I would never cheat in games like Fortnite or Rocket League, where I am giving myself an unfair advantage over actual people. But if I'm sitting around playing Tony Hawk? f*** yeah, I'll turn on perfect balance or whatever. I'm just here to have fun, I have no time for what someone else might think about my video game habits lol.

Yep I was in 9th grade when Castlevania 2 came out and beat it over a weekend when I rented it. Yea got the crap ending but I beat it without a guide. I don't remember anyone finding it hard or whatever until the modern era. Kind of like how now people that were not around in the era will claim OH Yea ET worst Atari game ever. Not even close. It is a complicated game that you need to read the instruction book to figure out how to play it. But it is much better than piles of horrible 2600 games.

You might need to look up how to find all items, force echoes, and scannable objects if you are a completionist, but everything else is straightforward. In fact, it’s a little too linear and straightforward for a metroidvania game.

Fortunately, Colecovision had the adapter to play 2600 games and did so much better than the 2600. River Raid was the first game I noticed the improvement on.

Colecovision and Intellivision were both way more powerful than the 2600. But both had a major flaaw, their controllers SUCKED. Sure the 2600 standard stock joystick aint great. But at least now with that you can just plug in a Sega Genesis controller and it works. Coleco had that weird stubby stick adn disc thing. Intellivsion had the flat disc. Both were shit.

The Colecovision controller wasn’t great, but not quite as bad as they’re made out to be. They didn’t age well, though. My Colecovision’s controllers are a noticeably stiffer than they were originally.

SG-1000 > Colecovision. Made from the same hardware, but the SG-1000 (especially the second model) had a _much_ better controller. Kind of a shame their libraries weren't cross compatible.

If the SG-1000 had any real distribution in the US the Colecovision would have made a module to play those games. If the controllers were the issue, there were third party controllers that could be used.

Nope still too big and just a crap controller. I sold off my Coleco system and carts 20 years ago. Most of the better games I got on a Coleco P&P or on various collections. Great system that was harmed by subpar controllers. Like teh 5200.

SG 1000 is a good system. But did it get a release in North America? It was one I never heard about until the mid 90s. And yes much much better controllers than the coleco.

I used to feel guilty about doing this, but having less time to game and it being more expensive kind of eliminated that. I still try to do it as a last resort only though.
