Been rewatching TNG on and off for awhile and as I'm nearing the end of the last season it feels like the show became way too dependent on Data toward the end. I guess since the show was out of ideas and he's an easy character to just bullshit up stuff with due to being an android but you could argue over a third of the season is episodes heavily featuring him if not singularly focused on him. Not that he's a bad character by any means but it's a bit much, then the problem continued into the movies.
Brought this up in another thread recently but I'm also reminded of a big part of why I stopped reading El Goonish Shive, for like a three year period it just became entirely fixated on Ellen when of the eight leads she was always pretty handily my least favorite.

I love Homestar Runner (both Homestar and the series) but it’s pretty much the Strong Bad Show and has been that way for almost the whole run.

I mean the show is named Naruto but might as well gave it to Sasuke with how much screen time he got
The will he/won't he bad guy stuff was intriguing until he went fully bad and then they tried to walk it back hard. Doesn't helped that the secondary characters got taken off the board hard sans Shikamaru for his arc

The Simpsons in its early days felt like Bart was meant to be the front and center character. Then the episodes at the tail end of the golden era and the beginning of the next one felt like they were really focusing on Homer more than anyone else.

In the wake of Jennifer Lawrence winning an Academy Award and just generally becoming a huge megastar, FOX tried hard to make her Mystique a cornerstone of the First Class series of X-Men films, even shoehorning her in as a founding member of the X-Men. This was made all the more awkward by the fact that Jennifer Lawrence just clearly did not want to play Mystique any more.

Happy Days and Family Matters have to be the poster children for this when it comes to TV shows.

Popeye went from a one-note character in a Thimble Theatre strip to being the focus of the entire comic.

I'm still trying to figure out how you make a post Return of the Jedi movie and it's got only like 12 seconds of Luke Skywalker. So... I guess kinda the opposite of the question lol.

I'm not gonna go all "/thread" or "this is the correct answer", but the fact that OP could rephrase this question "characters who became The Urkel of their respective work" and get more or less the same answers says it all.

But... yeah once she became big they tried to use as much as possible and had her mostly show up out of the makeup for it because again she didn't want to have to deal with it.

A lot of people criticized the Hangover sequels, particularly the third. The second one was mainly focused on Alan. The third one was focused on Alan and Chow.

For the most part, you can say the same with Voyager and Seven of Nine, with The Doctor being if not tied a close second.

I feel like Steven Universe would've probably ultimately been a way better show if he didn't have to be onscreen at all times for some reason. So much more interesting shit happens offscreen than anything he has going on and since by the end of the main show I found Steven extremely unlikable with his constant martyr complex and capacity for forgiveness that stretched so far as to basically have no actual principles it really impacted the whole experience for me and dragged down the parts of the cast I actually liked.
