WBD not keeping any of the NBA would be bizarre. When would the last time be that there was no NBA on TNT? 1989, basically. There's no scenario in my book where they don't keep some portion of their NBA rights, the past few months of demo topping NBA and NCAA basketball basically says they're obligated to keep it as well as find ways to make something from those Inside the NBA contracts, but WBD being a company desperate to cut costs wherever they can get whilst keeping the momentum on cable they've had is a situation I'm glad to have zero decision making power with. There's no option that doesn't hurt in some way or fashion.

Like, if this ends up being WBD losing all their rights, after the year they’ve had on top of the demos for all the NBA games this year, someone should be fired. No logical reason for that to happen, even for cost cutting.

AEW if WBD loses the NBA:

Like…Charles Barkley signed a new deal with WBD worth 8 figures for 10 years last year. And I’d be shocked if Ernie, Kenny and Shaq were in any way small. Ernie can do other sports, the f*** are the rest going to do there if they aren’t covering basketball games?
There’s no world where Barkley does a Dwayne Wade and attempts game show hosting. I’d like to live in that world but I don’t think it’s this one.
Add to that, instead of having AEW lose to sports on your sister station, it’ll be losing to your rival when the season starts. AND you’d be putting your eggs in a brand that’s still establishing itself as an alternative to one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world.
The entire prospect of this is mindboggling.

Zaslav is really bad at his job so losing the NBA wouldn’t surprise me.

WBD can match any NBA offer though, correct? I thought they had the right to match any offer.

That’s the key thing, if NBC is making that sort of bid, the counter is to make a bigger one and WBD from the off seemed to not be interested in doing that. The thing about saying Zaslav is bad at his job is that a lot of the decisions he makes could be slightly justified by going “Well, at least they have the NBA” and looking at how well that’s still doing to basically balance the financial scales (ignoring the government investigations about everything else going on right now but anyway). If they lose the NBA, well, if I were a shareholder, I’d basically want his head.

It has seemed that the framework of the AEW has been done for a while, but if WBD has to spend more for the NBA that could change.

Hell, I’m not even sure WBD *could* match that offer if they wanted to. Or if they did they’d suddenly started shelving even more movies for tax breaks to try to make up for it.

Yeah, by all accounts, they don’t want to do that because a) the shares will tank further because the shareholders will think they overpaid and b) like you said, they can’t afford to. It will be interesting what happens and what that’ll mean for the AEW deal since, as of writing, they’re very much in the exclusivity period. I’d also not be surprised if we hear stories at some point, if the deal isn’t done by the end of that period, that we hear about interested companies snooping since regardless of it being pro wrestling, having the number 1-5 show on a Wednesday every week and only losing to sports and big news stories is nothing to sneeze at.

Barkley can apparently leave if WBD loses the NBA. He’s also said he doesn’t actually intend on working for the length of that 10-year deal.

DAZN, who distributed AEW across Europe and Asia have ended their 3 year deal at the 1 year point due to AEW underpeforming to their expectations. Equally, their Mexican/South American partner, a service called Vix, has also dropped them: itrwrestling.com/news/major-streaming-service-drops-aew-due-to-poor-numbers/Their ITV, Sky and TNT deal, which cover UK, Germany and Africa are all still in place though.

Brought the rights to in the same way they did for the library with the royalty free WWE music. You have a license to use it for a certain amount of time you have to renew. So NBC probably would have to, and easily could, do the same.

Zaslav is really bad at his job so losing the NBA wouldn’t surprise me. Punk name dropping him must be one of the all-time bad promo lines and it keeps getting worse retrospectively.

The NBA might be interested in their games being on NBC over TNT because they are in more homes. And despite Peacock not being the best, NBC has a shit load more experience live streaming sports than Max does. They've done NFL, College football, Premier League, WWE, and the Olympics. That could be another incentive for the NBA and for Peacock to bid more. Yes, the NBA has NBATV, but they can always want more.
