I know that, for many of those, it means the game's over in like 20-30 minutes, but that's also as much I want to play that in the moment.

I played plenty of those games. I think there's a reason why some of the AI can be cheap in the arcades. But playing them on "free play" is much better because you could add in as many lives as you want.

There's definitely a balance when doing that though. I've played games (a couple beat 'em ups) where I continued WAAAAAY too many times and I come away feeling like I just won a war of attrition and didn't actually learn the game or get better. Which on free play, it's whatever I guess. No real harm done.

I do that often with shooters. My reflexs arent fast enough anymore for most shooters. But still enjoy playing thru them.

In my local arcade circa 1990, somehow the game Crime Fighters had reverted to literal ‘free play’, with unlimited credits available to all. A friend and I noticed this and stayed on for about half an hour before staff kicked us out at closing time!

A lot of arcade beat em ups were intentionally designed to be "quarter-munchers." Way I see it, free play is the player taking back some of the power from intentionally over-difficult games designed to milk them for as much money as possible lol

'cos ten pence play machines were still a thing in those days! r-type is another one played on MAME, i put on invincibility, just to see the flipping end ... as in the last THREE levels fully!!! never seen a "freeplay" though
